Squirrely about Colonoscopy

My Doctor has been suggesting I get a Colonoscopy for 18 years. I don’t want to “preach to the choir,” but thought some here may think the way I did and generally share my experience. In college I managed the University Weight Room. I was a swimmer but at 162 deadlifted 390 x 1 on my 12th set, was doing straight-leg deadlifts with 325 (6x8) super-setted with hanging leg raises off an overhead horizontal ladder, touching my toes to my knuckles for 6 sets of 20. That was all before I knew what a steriod was. Never dated one of the gymnasts like I wanted too, but the football team Captain nick-named me “Johnny-Abs,” and it stuck. Tested 4% body-fat in the submersible tank in the physiology department. Had a very tight diet I maintained many years. Married at 39 and after a few kids my belly started to grow. Long story short, similar to I’m sure to the experience of many on this site. 1) I avoided the colonoscopy because I always watched my diet and thought; colon cancer, not me, 2) distrust of Doctors; thought, if they go in there they will find something just to line their pockets, 3) squirrely about someone “putting something in my rear.” Not my area! Well, it took severe bleeding in my stool to get me to react. My point is: I felt nothing, before, during and/or after the procedure; nothing at all. Stupid fears; totally unfounded. So, if you’re at least 45, consider it. Had I done it then perhaps early detection would have been less invasive to manage. I’ll never have the abs again, but with 3 kids; 24, 20, and 15, it would be nice to be around longer to see them grow up!

Thanks for sharing your experience with this. Did they find the cause for the blood in stool?

Yes, I have a matastic tumor near my sigmoid colon (that is on the left side of the abdomen where the colon comes down and turns like an elbow to both reduce the stool and push it into the anal cavity). A metastic tumor is like a bunch of grapes; it consumes the surrounding cells continually growing. My tumor takes up a third of the circumference of my colon so it?s fairly serious. My surgery is scheduled for January 19, 2021. They will also remove the local lymph nodes for biopsy; hopefully the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes; it?s wait-and-see.

In addition to the tumor they only found one polyp and only one diverticulitous-causing ?outer growth;? like a baloon.
