NEW YORK (AP) -- A 9-year-old girl pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter Friday, admitting she fatally stabbed her 11-year-old playmate after a tug-of-war over a rubber ball went sour.

The girl, identified by the city only as Shanice K., admitted she stabbed Queen Washington once in the chest at a Memorial Day gathering in Brooklyn, the city said in a statement after the proceeding.

Judge Jane Pearl ordered that Shanice remain in a non-secure setting pending sentencing. She also ordered an investigation into the child's background.

"We are confident this is an appropriate resolution of this tragic matter," said Assistant Corporation Counsel Suzette Rivera. "The plea takes into account the great harm caused by the respondent and holds her accountable" for the slaying.

Shanice was accompanied by her mother and defense attorney Nicole Barnum in Brooklyn Family Court, the city said.

Shanice and the victim were described as close friends. The girls' mothers were best friends as well when Queen was invited to Shanice's home for a Memorial Day barbecue.

Police said the death occurred when Shanice's mother stepped out of her apartment to borrow something from a neighbor.

She returned to find that her daughter had plunged a steak knife into Queen's chest, police said. Queen stumbled into a hallway and collapsed.

Police, who could not recall a younger suspect being arrested for a killing in the city, said Shanice confessed shortly after the stabbing.

I don't know that TV has anything to do with it... I mean hell look at the old cartoons where you have daffy duck getting shot in the face all the time... the road runner crushing the coyote with boulders... things like that were always very violent - and you didn't really hear about 9 year olds stabbing each other.

Damn. So what do they do with the child now? Put her in kiddy jail?

I'm not trying to be funny.

i agree, my parents grew up with cartoons that were considered 'violent', and they never saw the need to stab someone over a toy...

I watched all the violent cartoons and not once did any of it influence me to stab anyone.

Exactly... I play GTA - but I haven't carjacked anyone... except that one time... but we're not talking about that ;)
People always look for something to blame other than themselves - especially parents trying to find excuses for why their kids are messed up. No - your kid didn't rape that woman because he saw it on TV - he did it because you have raised him to think women are inferior by beating your wife every day... and so on...

I agree with you guys. In our society today, people are always trying to put the blame on something/someone else. I grew up with all those cartoons too and I don't want to kill anyone. My son is 20 years old- he grew up with basically all the same shit that's on the go today, he plays the "violent" video games, etc, but he was raised in an environment that does not condone violence or hatred towards anyone. If he got on like that, he knows I'd kick the shit out of him ;) Seriously though, I firmly believe that TV/video games are not the problem. But, no doubt, kids who are predisposed to violence would probably be worse when exposed to this stuff on a regular basis.

It's really sad when some kids have zero chance from day one. And it's downright scary when a kid from a good family turns out bad for no "apparent" reason. I worked in the mental health field for 14 years and sometimes a little knowledge is a very scary thing. I've seen both sides of it.

damn, I remember fighting and crap when I was that age but, I dont think id KILL someone. not unless I really really wanted to.

I've killed people. Just a few though and uncle same told me to do it so it's o.k.
