LOL.... you've helped people before....silly man :smash:

I know what you mean about hurting yourself more. But it comes down to this-either I get it (if it comes to that), or I don't train. I HAVE to train :)

I heard something about the cortisone actually damaging the tissue inside and making the problem worse in the long run.

well, i kinda think that anything thats gettin injected in 2 a hurt/inflamed/torn etc muscle isnt really helpin it....its basically coverin up the pain

my thing is, if u have the shot & somehow do more damage, ur really not gona know until its 2 late

i really can sympathise with ya girl....ive had some injuries & i did & took somethins 2 cover up the problem, which put me out 4 alot longer....now i know u wana train, but injuries can b a way of ur body tellin u 2 take a lil time off....

ok guys! i had three in the same shoulder over a five month period, it did hurt a bit, but never realy solved the prob! strange thing was, as soon as the doc started talking about going in with a knife, the bloody thing just went away!! so i would sujest threatening the bugger, lol. ( the power of the mind is a strange thing )

Thanks guys for the concern. The thing with me though, is that my joints are shit. I would be willing to bet if my shoulder was scoped, it would be in a mess like my knee (not quite as bad because I have never had surgery on it). I am NOT having a scope on anything unless it becomes absolutely necessary like it did with my knee. I want to get thru this year and compete and then I don't care what happens. I'll have surgery then if I have to.

I know that's not the greatest of attitudes, but that's it. I worked way too friggin hard to get where I am, and I have to compete once more, and the sooner the better, cause my knee is NOT going to hold out much longer. I mean, in good enough condition to train to compete. I figure that if I get to 55 without a knee replacement I'll be damn lucky :(

I am hoping I will not need the cortisone shot, but we'll see.

I have recently had on ein my left ac joint in my shoulder. It didnt hurt buut, it felt weird. For whatever reason I passed out and they had to inject it again. My injury was a mild type 1 ac irritation if I am not mistaken. I have been liftinlight since then and using my therabands a lot which has seemd to help. I have a more pain free ROM when doing what hurt me before, DB BP. I havent BB BP yet, not comfortable enough. It hasnt hurt at all but I have also been VERY careful with my ROM too. I have heard bad things from people who had cortisone injections but, they were all from people who had them in their spine and are 50+ years old, Don't exercise or eat healthy either. I have not been able to find any convincing evidence that these kind of injections for my specific problem, can worsen the injury. I know ther is a POSSIBILITY that they can discolor the tissue ie, the tissue surrounding your muscles, but I havent found anything else. I will keep looking though, keep me posted if you find anything.

I just talke to a guy at work actually who said he had injections in his wrist, they helped the problem, he said it is gone but, he has to keep his wrist out of the sun for a long amount of time, or it hurts sometimes he said.

PTAaron should get in on this, I think he had one. He's probly a good person to ask about this too I would think??

My shoulder doesnt hurt anymore like it used to. I used to be able to touch it and it would hurt, always, anytime of day. Now it doesnt.

Well heres this....

The possible negative effects of cortisone injections are:

Weakening of tendons if further excessive load is continued soon after the injection, possibly leading to tendon rupture (this is THE most significant side effect).
Infection (can happen but very rare in my hands - over 2000 injections given, no known infections)
Skin reaction (can happen but usually mild)
Cost if the treatment doesn't work (although usually less than other treatments such as physiotherapy or surgery)
Pain of injection (usually only bad in the sole of the foot as cortisone can be given through thin guage needles) but varies from person-to-person

Impingement lesions, such as ITB friction syndrome of the knee, trochanteric bursitis of the hip, and rotator cuff impingement of the shoulder (without major tendon damage).
Conditions where the prognosis for long-term improvement is very good due to removal of overuse trigger for injury.
Situations where short-term pain relief is by far the major priority for management.

In a trial in 1994-5 of treatment of shoulder complaints in general practice we showed that in a study period of 11 weeks, injection therapy with a corticosteroid was superior to physiotherapy and manipulative therapy in the patients whose complaints originated from the structures of the glenohumeral joint, the subacromial space, or the acromioclavicular joint (synovial group).

Just one study and realtively short amount of time but, I think there is more on the page. This is specifically pertaining to my injury as well.

Oh yea, the shot hurt worse than ever for about 4 days after the injection, then it was better than it has been in a while.

Wow, thanks for all that SS :)

I'll let you know if i have to get one, and if so, how it goes.

Great info Skullsmasher!

I've had them before... they don't hurt very much at all. I've had them in both shoulders for various things and in my elbow once... You don't have to worry about "masking the pain and doing more damage" it isn't like you are being injected with lidocaine or something like that where you are just making the area numb - the cortisone gets rid of the inflammation which is presumably THE CAUSE of the pain. The theory with cortisone helping impingement is that the tendon got pinched and is now inflammed - so it is swollen - and is easier to pinch more. Getting the inflammation out of there will make it less likely to get pinched again - and it should fix the problem, as long as whatever caused the initial irritation is taken care of.
SS already covered the risks of the injections... I guess tendon rupture is more of an issue in the knee region if I remember correctly.

Getting my injection on Wednesday. Please god a week after that I'll be able to trian, or I'll be ready to kill myself. Now to get my knee fixed up :(

Just had it. Couldn't even feel it. Hopefully back to the gym before the end of next week.
