I just started playing guitar over the last few months. I love it i practice at least 2 hours a day. I started noticing at night my fretting hand, it falls asleep and it is like a cold sharp pain. I have numbness in myfingertips. I shake it move it and get it to feel ok and i go back to bed and 45minutes later it does it again. Do you think this is carpal. I have been typing for years, i work a desk job at a computer. Have any of you had the surgery i called my doctor today to seek medical advice just curious the recovery time and stuff. I refuse to stop playing, i feel like i was made to play guitar so i might need surgery.

Definitely carpel tunnel. The good news is that in most cases you can go to a hand and wrist specialist and get the problem and often cured by a few steroid (cortiosteroid) injections into the carpel tunnel. I had the shit so bad I couldn't even sleep at night. I'm symptom free now, and the last inject was about six years ago.

cut the hand off and the pain should subside

Unless you get that phantom limb syndrome. People get their legs cut off from listening to bunk advice from Wilford Brimley and their toes still itch.

THanks for the advice and the support guys i am going to go for the cortisone shots

Youre welcome..I was right on the spot with the guitar hero ..wasnt I??..:D

My mother had really bad carpal in both of her wrists. She tried the shots but her situation was too severe. After about 6 months of not being able to sleep or functionally use her hands, she had surgery done on both of them. She recovered in a week and hasn't had any problems since. Insurance covered it as well.

Just another option depending on how bad it gets for you.

stretch stretch stretch....also if those shots helped Lifts, try them....better than surgery

I have been sleeping with a brace on my hand and it has not been hurting me. I think when i was sleeping i was crunching my wrist

Sounds like it could be Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Raise your arm parallel to the floor palm up and bend your wrist as far backward (toward the floor) as you can. Take the first two fingers of your other hand and press on the affected wrist right in the middle. If it is CTS, that should hurt. If that doesn't hurt, your pain is more likely caused by something else.

If it is CTS, the only treatment options I know of are corticosteroid shots or surgery. Of the two, surgery is the most permanent but you will be out of action for several weeks during recovery. My best friend had severe CTS in both hands. He had the surgery done on one hand and then, after recovery, had the surgery done on the other hand. He hasn't had any problems since.
