Steve Michalik is a bodybuilder most active during the 1970s and 80's. He won a number of titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. USA, the Mr. America in 1972 and the NABBA Mr. Universe in 1975 as well as 22 other titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. Apollo and the Most Muscular Man in the USA.

Shortly after the 1975 Mr Universe, Steve was involved in a serious car accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down and relegated to a wheel chair for 3 years.

At the 1980 IFBB Miami Grand Prix event, Steve made his now famous comeback to the stage, where television commentator Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced Steve as the Phantom Bodybuilder. Placing 4th in the event qualified him for the newly formed Grand Prix tour.

Any old schoolers will remember him and Lou posing in an advertisment for Dan Lurie supplements in the mags. He was known for his insane workouts of 50-75 sets per bdpt. RIP Steve.

Damn, Last I saw him was in bigger stronger faster and he looked pretty healthy. Sorry to see him go. By many accounts he was intense. He took to training natural BBers after his health scares, liver, heart, stroke, I think some form of cancer too??

Ahh, those shining moments live well beyond our meager years!
RIP Steve

The one thing I never cared for about him was the way he demonized steroids for his health problems. Thats not to say that they didn't have a hand in them.. But No mention was ever made about the diuretics he took.. diuretics can cause severe health problems all the way up to and including death.

He was one of the great.. RIP Steve
