Don't get too excited, it is not a miracle pill or a special way of wroking out.

Tnx to my thermodynamics class I now have an excellent understanding of energy, weight loss, weight gain, diet and working out.

Here are my observations.

First some definitions.
c=cal=small calorie = scientific calorie = 4.18 joules ( metric unity of energy)
C=Calorie= large calorie = food Calorie that we are used to = 1000c ( small c)
g=acceleration due to gravity =10 m/s^2
F=Force = mass times acceleration ( mass in kilograms)
W=Work= Force x total distance
n= the amount of repettions performed = total distance divided by one repetiton distance.

Here is the claim ( I know it is common knowledge but things make more sense to me when I can undestand the undelaying facts)

In order to lose wieght it is much better to eat less and increase metabolism than excersize more.

Example: 250 pound man, running for 45 minutes.

mass =113 kg ,
distance = (I am converting runnig here in to jumping 20cm in the air two times per second) 0.2meters x45x60x2 =1080 meters
total Work done in 45 by running on treadmill by 250 pound man = 1080x9.8x113= 1.2 million joules = 286000 small calories =286 food calories
Wow.
It is much easier to eat 286 calories less than run 45 minutes.

Example 2: Average 250 pound man sedantary 6.2 30 years old
Average daily calorie consumption = 2200 food calories
Lets say we increase his metabolism by %10, so he burns 220 calores more per day, this is equivalent of the same man runnig for 45 minutes every single day of the week.

A bit more calculation later... your body burns enough calories at rest just by pumping blood thru your veins, keeping your muscles fueled, and keeping you warm, which could propel you to run for 7.5 hours non stop at the pace described above.

Conclusion:
Increasing metabolism and dieting is much more effective at losing weight than excersizing.
In a perfect world ofcourse they would go hand to hand, but when somebody tells you that losing weight is %90 diet, they are not kidding. Allthogh they are a bit wrong. If I have to range the effectiveness I would rate metabolism as number 1, diet as number two and excersize as third by a long margin...

Disclaimer: These calculations don't take the muscle building and metabolims increasing effects of working out in to effect. Added with that excersize would have a greater effect than shown, however it would still come third.

Exercise increases metabolism as well as adding lean muscle mass which also increasing resting metabolism.

its a breakthru for me, I am hard headed and allthough I may hear something hundreds of times, only after I actually go through the process of proving it, I get it.
