I think I might be missing a key piece of information regarding ketogenic diets. I have heard several people rant and rave about how good they are; yet, the further I travel down the path towards my md, the less I find these diets to be beneficial. So...hopefully someone can clear up a couple of questions I have. Starving your body of carbs (no glucose intake) would quickly deplete your glycogen stores, within a week or so I believe all of the glycogen in your muscles and your liver would be depleted. However, the brain/nervous system, testes, and other key parts of your body can only survive with a glucose energy source. This next part scares me the most, gluconeogenesis, where your body breaks down proteins to form Acetyl CoA and reverse the process of glycolysis to provide glucose for the glucose deprived parts of your body. Now if your body is having to break down proteins to produce glucose for important parts of your body like the brain, I don't really see to many more proteins being broken down to form glucose for your testes (Hello Low Test Levels!) Now to bring all of this rambling to my main question, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO A KETOGENIC DIET??? For me at least, gaining muscle is hard and if I want to lose fat I just need to bust my ass on the cardio (which seems like the best way to burn excess fat to me besides a SENSIBLE diet. I really hope I am missing something because I have friends who live by the ketogenic diet. If anyone could enlighten me I would be very appreciative. :albertein
