Umbilical Hernia

Will it ever end? Now I have an umbilical hernia from 5 months of continuous coughing and hacking fits. Will need surgery. Just when I get used to the steel job, damn. I know they can do this outpatient. Anyone know the recoup time or restrictions? I need to be working, but it's far too gone to leave alone.

It's not entirely too serious, but good to have it closed up. I had mine fixed in 2007, and just had a small ventral hernia (1/2 to 1" above navel) fixed this last July (during my gallbladder removal). It didn't hurt at all for me, and i'd avoid squats/deads/heavy leg press, etc....for a good 3-4 months. You can head back before that, but i'd avoid those exercises to give it time to heal properly. You will be back to work soon after, but may need to be put on light duty for awhile.

Umbilical hernia surgery is about 6 weeks recovery then 2 weeks to ramp up in the gym to where you were before surgery. So 6 weeks out of gym and 2 weeks back in slow before going back to normal. You will be on light duty for the first 2 weeks after surgery, no driving or anything like that.

Thanks

A friend who is an MD and surgeon was doing light upper body workouts 4 days post op, he got the mesh put in.

Are you being serious that's what your doctor said?? Dude I work in a heavy industrial job and I was back to normal work that following week. I had one of the worst ones my surgeon had ever seen. I had the mesh put in as well.

Yes sir that is what the surgeon said to me, he told me that if I wasn't going to be out of the gym for 6 weeks it isn't worth getting done because it would just fail. I have one hernia that I had fixed fail and it has become part of my umbilical hernia I have now, so I have a double umbilical hernia! He is going to put in the mesh(6x6 square). He said first 2 weeks no driving or anything like that and I will be off the gym for 6 weeks then I can go back but to take it slow and ramp up for the first 2 weeks back then I can go back to doing what I used to do. He is ding it lathroscopy so there wont be any incisions by the hernia there will be some small incisions on my sides.

Thanks

I've had an umbilical hernia for years now. Sometimes it hurts, mist if the time not. I just deal with it. It's not killing me, yet, so why worry about it. But that's just me.

It could get bad if it strangles your bowels. That was why I got mine fixed.

I've had the mesh done and it was tendon for a few days.. A week later I was in the gym with a belt on but it hurt so I wait another week. Then started light. A few weeks of that then back at it.. That was in 09 or '10 and no issues since
