I was running down I75 headed home and jumped off at the exit to get fuel just in time to watch the whole thing happen right before my eyes.
I've been awake all night because of it.
I ran up to the car to see if I could help save someone , I grabed a arm of what appeared to be a woman and another , ......and they ALL were decapated plus.
3 killed in high-speed crash on U.S. 441
The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 441 just west of Interstate 75.
Witnesses said the driver was speeding east toward Alachua and appeared to lose control, striking a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Brian Crawford of Alachua.
"I was in the outside lane and he clipped me. He was flying," said Crawford, who was not injured. "He hit this embankment and ramped it up. He hit the pole and went over a truck."
Alachua Police Lt. Patrick Barcia Jr. said the identities of the victims were not known. He added, however, that it appears they are from out of state.
Wreckage was spread across the parking lot of the Days Inn hotel and in a ditch in front of the hotel, where the fatal impact occurred after the car hit a hotel sign pole. The car was split in two with the two main pieces about 15 feet apart. One part of the car hit a pickup that was parked at the hotel.
The airborne car just missed the tractor cab of Jonathan Burrows of Wisconsin who, with partners Keith Albertson and Sable Miller, had checked into the hotel and were about to go to a restaurant for dinner.
"I saw him hit [Crawford] and then he got all squirrelly. Then he went straight up, and it was just a matter of which way to go - right or left. [Miller] and I went left and [Albertson] went right and dove," Burrows said. "It was like, you look up in the air and then it was like a pause. You could see glass coming down. Then the car hit the pole and split. Part of it hit my truck. It was weird."
None of the three were injured.
The car sheared a wood light pole, which broke at about 7 feet high. The rest of the pole fell on Burrows' truck. The driver's mirror on Burrows' truck was ripped off by the car.
Barcia said the car also hit the thick pole for the Days Inn sign and split in two. The sign on top of the pole was damaged as a result of the impact to the pole.
Police did not have an estimated speed of the car as it drove through a 45-mph zone. Crawford estimated it at about 100 mph, while Burrows put it at 80 mph.
"I didn't know what it was at first. I was looking in the median for another car," Crawford said. "People said they saw him run the light by Santa Fe High School going well over 100 mph."
Barcia said investigators were trying to determine the speed and other factors that led to the crash.
