Currently on week 2 of a 12 week cut, hitting cardio after breakfast. Calories are dropped, no milk, sugar, lower carbs, etc.(It sucks) Anyway, I'm getting a strong smell of ammonia after cardio. Has anyone else experienced this? I read something that it's caused from protein breakdown. Obviously you're not only burning fat when you do cardio, but I'm walking around my house thinking "what on earth did she clean with" then I realized it was me when I was stretching out, lol. I'm thinking because I lowered my carb intake? I'm getting plenty of protein. Any thoughts?

You are toxic, is my guess. Your body needs a good cleansing. Unless it's the byproduct of one of the supplements you're taking. But if that is the case you're taking too much of it.

I researched a little more, and it's caused by protein metabolizing. I guess your body uses this for fuel, when it runs out of carbs to burn, which makes sense cuz my carbs are lower than they normally are, and protein is higher than normal, because of the deficit. It breaks down the protein into amino acids, and burns it for fuel, and somewhere in the process gets converted to ammonia by the kidneys, and you sweat it out. You learn something new everyday I guess. There's no way I would guessed that one.

It's the signs your kidneys are fucked up....no joke it really is

during low cal low carb high protein dieting you can overcome your urea cycle and excrete ammonia through the skin.

Are you wearing some clothes that you have been wearing for quite some time that has been drenched in sweat alot? Reason I ask is when I was in Philippines, I would sweat a ton at the gym - like being literally soaked within 20 minutes due to the extreme heat & humidity with no air-con and even no electric fans. Sooo, after wearing those clothes many times to the gym, that ammonia smell got "embedded" in them. I mean, after they were washed, sure they smelled good. But as soon as they even began to get a little sweat on them, they would wreak of ammonia again. Simply had to toss them. Would never get that smell wearing a new shirt - only ones that had been soaked in sweat many times. Try wearing a new shirt and see if you still smell it dude.

Increased protein metabolism equates to increased urea, if you smell like ammonia, it could be that you simply need to increase water intake by a couple liters a day.

Could be. I wash them every time, but I have the same couple of pairs. Never even thought about it getting stuck in the clothes.

Ozzy, the kidneys are fine. I had them checked recently for any issues, because the aviation physician over exaggerated the issue of "excessive protein in my urine" which wasn't excessive, and is common in people who exercise a lot,(also common for some protein to get mixed in the urine later in the day) so they have been checked by my regular doc, and no issues. I can only imagine he wants to punch all of these people misreading all this stuff lately, and it's aggravating to me also, because I have been back and forth, for issues that don't even exist.

Could the fact I'm doing the cardio in the morning make a difference. I have breakfast, a cup of green tea and then I'm off to my cardio. I don't really take in much water until after the cardio is done. I'm getting a gallon to 1 1/2 gallons a day. Maybe I should have a big glass before cardio.

Of course I washed mine everytime also dude haha! But after being drenched in sweat so many workouts, that ammonia smell just would not permanently wash out. Next time wear a new shirt/shorts when doing cardio and holla back results.

Lmao, you had me worried for a minute. I'll let you know tomorrow.

I've ran into this before like Hank described especially when I was running something like tren for any amount of time.. Sucked because I had toss some of my favorite clothes..
Mine would smell great once they came out of the wash but once I hit the sunlight again it would somehow break down the chemicals making the shirt smell again and within minutes they would start smelling like ammonia right away....

glass of water before cardio, different clothes, no ammonia.

Yup same thing.
Gosh it was sometimes embarrassing when you're chatting at the gym and you were like "phuck..that's coming from me"!
