On the 18th I competed in a power lifting comp, placed very high with a 555 bench, 675 dead and 725 ssquat. This last weekend (Saturday) I went to a bench press competition just to watch, saw the competition and decided to compete anad won the Masters raw class with a 545lb press.
Today I went out in the back yard just to loosen up a bit and 225 felt like it was going to rip my shoulders out. 315 hurt badly, but by the time I got into 405 and above I guess I had loosened up. It seemed the higher I went the less pain I experienced.
This was not pain like I've felt before. It was almost like an arthritis pain.
I am 55 so it is not out of the question. I'm beat up and banged up from work, then I get home and train or hit the gym and train.
Any of you older bro's experienced anything like this before? Like I said, this pain was not the normal pain and went away the heavier I went, or matybe the more loose I got.

not much you can do really. I have arthritis in one elbow and tendenitis in both. I dont want cortizone. stretch, use an elbow wrap.

135 is painful and as i graduate up in weight it gets less painful. I attribute it to a few things. blood flow (aka warm up), stretching, and then one I thought of recently.. The heavier I go the more the stabilizers get taken out of the motion. 135 can go east-west, but 405 is only going north-south.

go see an ortho bro, get an xray. could also be tendinitis in which case, stretches help me a ton. he will xray both sides. 2 reasons he will do that, obvious reason being to check both sides, but the other is to compare the hurt side with the not hurt side for severity of damage.

My left elbow (in xray) looks very smooth with a consistent space between the bones. The other looks like the end of a dry chicken leg bone, rigid with noticeably less consistency.

hang in there brotha!

Well you may have been training harder than ever over the last few months, without a break really, and some of this might be expected.

I sometimes experience this phenomenon benching too. I dont bench 545 though :)

When I am pushing my bench hard like you are.. I experience the exact same thing. I don't lift as big as you do, but when pushing my body in the 400 range to push the envelope to the next tier this happens to me. I have to take a week off and let my CNS relax a bit.

My schemes when tyring to move up in weight would be warm up 135, 225. Then 315 for around 10. Then up to 405 for about 3 sets of 3-4. Then back down to either 315 for 10. After doing this for a few weeks and my lifts start to go up. I get that burn out stage that you are talking and have to take 1-2 weeks of either off or light weight. I hate it.

Recently I went through a long time of feeling beat up on bench. Every other week I was partially tearing something on the big lifts. I had to go light for a while. Never had this experience and it was a first. I think our body is constantly changing and adjusting. As you already know and do... just listen to it and push it a little to find out, but not too hard and injur.

we may all look at you look superman but even he took the cape off occasionally. look at how for youve come in the last year. i agree with shovel, time for a break beast

I was going to take a couple of weeks off but it's hard to resist the iron. I need the pump!

You have a few years on me, but I know the feeling you are getting well. I have had three surgeries on left shoulder and one on my right. Arthritis is very common to set in after surgery. Have you had surgeries? I had to finally go on celebrex to ease the pain, but it does seem the heavier you go the easier it gets. Try warmer the Labrum up before starting. Grab a 5-10 lb. D.B. and slowly swinging it in a circuler motion, and holding it by your side and going in and out. Warming the Labrum will reduce pain and keep you from having to go under the knife as well.
Good Luck...

know the feeling man, i just did both my shoulders in at a festival. im dying to get back in the gym but im not going to risk it as it might set me back even further. take a break brother, you've earnt it!

I have been chilling the past week. Huert my back at work to the point I left early Friday. Today it's feeling much better, but still trying to heal while busting butt at work every day is hard.
I'm too old for this crap. I need an easier job.
