Back Surgery

Has anyone recovered from either a discectomy and laminectomys in the lumbar spine? What about fusions? My friend is severely hobbled by this and we were discussing when and if he could go back after? Wanted to hear your experiences as I know so many of my friends, who also train heavily, also have degenerative disc disease, hernations, etc.
