It's actually old Irish slang.
I've been reading, "The Master of Ballantrae," by the Scottis author, Robert Louis Stevenson.
I have read many old Irish and Scottish texts, besides, I have always been given to quality literature.
I have many Irish and Scottish ancesters as well, and certain words and phrases were passed down as common language.
