There are no political debates in a firefight. No one cares who you voted for in the last election or what particularl church you attend, or whether or not you went to Harvard or a community college. War is simple really and I believe that's one of the main reasons it is missed so often and by so many. When you are in a combat zone, living and working every single day, you develop bonds with people that transcend the normal concept of friendship.. you become family. I had a lot of surgeries to get me back to the point I am at now and as bad as that feels most days, I am still here. I still get to see my children grow up and try to navigate the world around them. I got to come home. Many did not.
This weekend, among the hot dogs and hamburgers, the pool parties and the lakes, remember to take a second and think about what it means. No matter your views on war or politics always remember that many of those people were ideological kids just like you and I once were. They believed in this country so feverishly and fought for it without hesitation and they left their dreams on the battlefield.
There will be families across this nation, some bound by blood and some bound by other means, mourning and missing their father, mother, brother, and friends. I genuinely hope that every one of you has a great weekend and enjoys it safely but please remember that sometimes the cost of that freedom, is paid for in blood. Take a second and raise a glass to the ones who wrote that check as well.
