Anybody ever torn a muscle or know of someone tearing a muscle during the negative part of an exercise? I'm not speaking of muscle breakdown when the micro-tears actually occur...as the negative part is when most of that occurs. I'm speaking of muscle tears as in injuries, blown pec, torn bi, etc. I peronally dont know anyone who has torn a muscle on the negative part...its always been on the concentric part.

I'm asking, as I'm thinking of adding in some heavy negative work occsacionally to try to break through some barriers. As most of you know, I'm unemployed now and have PLENTY of time to bust balls and recover...due to no hard-ass factory work anymore yaay! Hehe :D Also, I can hit the gym now at a convenient time of day when theres enuff people so I always can have some spotters...which is a must for this gig. I have done my share of negatives in the past. However, I'm not 28 anymore and wanna make sure to go at it safe. :p

Btw, I'm not speaking of negatives with the same weight as a normal set...I'm speaking of HEAVY negatives after I do my normal shit. Example...my heaviest set on smith inclines is 365 for 4-5...so after that I will load the bar up to about 495 and do 1 set of negs...thats it...1 set all thats needed. I'll probably do 1 set of negs in that fashion for each bdwt once every 10-14 days and see what kinda results I get after a few months.

So any info, documents, links if any of you know about pertaining to muscle or tendon tears/injuries from eccentrics, holla pls.

Thx

ocassionally???..i always do one set of negatives, specially on chest day -last set

Ive never heard of it, but i would assume that the extra weight could always provide the opportunity for an injury. Thats just extra stress on the muscle which at any time could give, so i guess it could happen.....A good negative rep seems like it would put more stress on a muscle than a regular heavy rep....Jmo.....dont injure yourself now that you have all this time on your hands.....It would suck ass to have all this time to bust ass in the gym only to tear something.....Being couped up in the house injured eating Hamburger Helper all day would fatten you up real nice;)

I have a friend who was doing a set of 10 with 405 on his eight rep he was lowering the bar and a tendon snapped in his pec. I was right there he was lowering the weight at the time of injury.

watch the negatives....its easy to get injured.....especially with heavy weight and the older you are....

Can you even control 100+ lbs over your normal rep weight? How slow are you bringing it down?

Oh hell yeah dude...you never done negatives-only before? You can control a SHITLOAD more weight on the eccentric phase.

But after hearing muscle tears can occur on the negative phase, I think I'll ditch this idea. My ass goes heavy enuff and no time for trying new shit just to fuck something up. I'll stick with Olys advice and only do some light negative work on cable curls and Jane Fonda cable kickbacks. :p

Yep I do them but not very often, just to break a plateau. I try take atleast 15 seconds to lower it though. If I can do 100+ over a 3-4 rep range weight than I am not lifting enough in the first place. You need to enter one of them negative rep bench contests bro :). I'd put money on ya.

Be extra careful if you're juicing, as this makes you tight and most tears happen as a result of that tightness.
I wouldn't do a negative with a weight I couldn't sustain the descent for at least 8 seconds.

8-10 secs here dude.

I have have had two shoulders surgeries in the past four years. One from lifting the other was a cyst on the same shoulder. Being down sucks monkey turds bro, no matter if it's self inflicted or not. That's some weight on incline, hell that's weight flat. I had a bro that had the same tear Lifts was describing and he was down for about a year. Had to have surgery immediately and to me his left pec doesn't look good at all. By that I mean it looks like shit. To me about to turn 40 it's just not worth it anymore like it was five years ago. Not sure if I would feel this way if I had not had the surgeries. It's all about risk vs. reward. Is it worth it to ya. The top of my left trap will never crown like my right because of it.

All I can say is becareful bro, hate to see ya have problems......

dont drive because you might get into an accident..hey it happens everyday..c'mom..warm up properly, perform your straight sets, stretch in between sets and u good to go..remember everytime u step in a gym youre taking chances to tear or rupture something...If it's in the cardS for u to get injured it's gonna happen regarless ..even during your 25 lbs concentration curls..:D...so dont fear negatives they WORK...Do them every other workout, of ocurse after the last set of Presses.
