New "Classic Physique" Division

I saw that they were adding this the other day. It is for guys that are too big for Mens Pysique or want to take that look to the next level but not necessarily go to the extremes of the modern day body builder. Going to go more of a total package look I guess, that Frank Zane/Serge Nubret look.

They can concentrate on upper body, because they never have to show their legs.

I saw that. I think it's great. Maybe Manion's response to Arnolds call for no bottle shapes.

I like the idea but I think they set the weight limits WAAAY too low. I mean good God - a guy between 5'11 - 6'0 can only weigh 207 lbs! Even Bob Paris weighed 225-230 on stage. That's more realistic weight for a guy that height than 207 geesh.

yeah I was kinda thinking the same think.... not to brag but im 5'11'' at 218 rt now at 8% bf. if I cut down more to 207lbs I could step on that stage easily....ive never done it but I was just telling my wife im gonna do it!! why not? she thinks its dumb and she says "its not like you win big money or something just some dumb trophy." im like hell yeah that would just be an awesome achievement!

Looks like they still want "low body fat" in the competitors. Not shreaded, but lean. 6'2" at 230lbs is a pretty big guy say at 10%.

someone my hight would go 185. Personally if I was to get to 5% I would probably be between 170 and 180 tops. Given my broad waist I think 185 could look pretty good for a classic style physique. I'm thinking Lee LaBrada or Samir Bennout. Maybe a little smaller than that but not much.

Those weight restrictions are lame, most of the physique guys come in bigger than that. And you need to buy your trunks from the NPC.

On the other hand I weigh in around 205 lbs @ 6' last 2 shows and I look skinny. Imo

Classic era physiques HAD muscle. Arnold, Lou, Robby, Franco, Sergio, Serge, Padilla, Corney, Menzter - these were the best physiques of that era and would NOT qualify based on those lame weight restrictions pfft. I mean cmon - classical doesn't mean skinny by any means. Zane himself would BARELY make weight based on these standards. What I see happening in this is we will see many physiques with VERY underdeveloped quads/hams. You will see guys focusing on small waists, V taper, delts, arms & chicken legs. And guys with big bone structures will be out completely. Hell I haven't weighed 207 since I was 17.lol Like I said, right idea, but way overboard with the application.

Perhaps since this is just the beginning stages, they will alter it to be more realistic in the future. What I would have liked to see more than this, is to just bring back the vacuum in bodybuilding, and make it really count. You can't do a vacuum, then you don't fucking even place - period. In order for that to happen, the GH & slin will have to be dramatically reduced/stopped, which will bring down the freakish size a bit also. I think this could bring bodybuilding more mainstream again as it was headed in the 80's. Who remembers Cory Everson, Rick Valente & Shawn and crew on ESPN regularly showing everyone how to get buff? Haven't seen that in a couple decades - would like to see that type of thing come back.

I think the new division is a great idea. it gives a place for competitors and fans alike that prefer a more classic look rather than the massive ones that are blocky and out of proportion with distended gut or the underwear model type physique division. Most of the bigger guys, like guys that walk around over 250 don't like the division. Smaller guys like me usually appreciate something like this, like Lee Labrada, Sami Bennout, Frank Zane and similar physiques. Lee was 5'6" - 5'7" at 180-190. Frank Zane was 5'9" at 190, Sami 5'7" - 5'8" at 180-190. So the new class would be similar or slightly smaller than these classic guys. plus these guys looked good when they turned pro probably 10 or more lbs lighter than what the peak pro weights were.

Yea, this will be interesting, but probably a mess for a few years until they figure out the judging parameters on what they are looking for....just like women go through each year.
