Live on the 2nd floor of a 100 year old farmhouse with a roof pitch of about 15 degrees. The ridge is only 6 feet above the 2nd floor ceiling. There are 2 apartments on the 2nd floor; stairs are outside with a small parlor and 2 doors. The ceiling of the parlor is soffit, with slots cut into it, used primarily for exterior overhangs. When I moved in a year ago the apartment smelled like rotten eggs/sewage, but I thought it was from being unused. I cleaned the hell out of it to no avail. Put up with that crap for a year. Sewer gas. I think that's why I've had so many health problems since. Can't sleep, constant cough and watery eyes, wanting to puke. Plus my cancer outbreaks this past year surpassed the previous 8 years. Lethargy, you name it, then I did some research. Looked at the roof, no vent pipes. Four toilets in the building and no soil vent pipes; code failure. Actually the soil vents went to the crawl space to be vented out the soffit in front of my front door. The research of my health issues made lack of oxidized cells the issue and in October I had bought an ozone generator, but it was insufficient. Now I know the landlord has been poisening me for a year. In addition, 3 of my ceilings have visible mold. I complained the 1st of January 2016 but nothing has been done in 12 months. My lease expired on Dec 31st. I sent the landlord a 90 day notice to exit but he sent me a registered letter denying my deposit because, according to the lease, the notice should have come at the beginning of October. Either I lease another year or forfeit the deposit. Anybody know about sewage gas poisoning?

Yep....move now and call the code place and health department

Fuck it youre a pussy message me and I'll call on the fucking piece of shit.

I would've already threatene him with a law suit and talked to the other tenants about it. Then one day leave some bacon cooking on the stove and just drive away trust me you will get the last laugh in that shit bwhahahaahaba

To be honest I just didn't put the pieces together until after 3 hours of research today. I have very little experience with plumbing and have an appointment with an attorney tomorrow. The front screen door was broken and wouldn't fully close until he had it replaced in November 2016, so there was always a huge draft. Once that got fixed the smell got worse so much so that I knew it wasn't my imagination and started researching it. Answers a lot of questions about my health problems the past year.

I would call the local building inspector and get his input before you see the attorney. I do not know where you are at but 99% of the municipalities require venting out through roof or sidewall, it also sounds like you may not have any pee traps installed which is why you are getting the sewer gas odor.

When all else fails, post up your landlords info......

The other issue is that he is connected politically so I am careful who I speak to. He is an old family name and is a member of the Board of County Commissioners. As usual, I was up at 3:15 this morning hacking and getting sick.

Besides the sewer gas, the mold is a big issue too and can be the cause of your health issues as well. Take pictures of all this and get your documentation squared away. Get someone from the health department to come look as well. This bitch wants to play with your deposit, fine let him use it to pay attorney fees then get in his pocket for your health issues as well. Don't mes around with this.

Sewer gas is also explosive.

That's not completely true. While sewer gases can contain methane it's usually not enough for an explosion. Asphyxiation is more likely than anything. The explosions from "sewer gas" are usually when a leak of natural gas occurs and follows the sewer lines to an ignition source.

Trust me I've made a good career working on gas lines

In the mean time, I turned off all the baseboard heaters, opened 2 windows and threw on an extra wool blanket. Slept so well last night... best in ages. Meeting the code guy on Monday. Feeling power coming back.
