here is the question. Is there anyway you can have a wireless laptop go online without being connected to a home router? It'd basically be a wireles laptop you can use anywhere. What is needed (if possible to do)?

You would need a laptop with a wireless card (internal or external doesn't matter) and a LOT of dumb people that don't use encryption for their access points.

that's what I was thinking lol...so basically this isn't possible legally yet

There is a couple of ways you can do accomplish this. You can buy a broadband wireless card from a cell phone company such as verizons

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/phonedetailpopup.jsp?item=phoneFirst&phoneId=1584

or, if you have a cell phone with capable data transport abilities you can buy the usb cable for your phone and hook it up to your laptop and use it as a modem. I have verizons vcast network and run a wireless access port on my computer so it is pretty quick and the only fee I pay is for my phones airtime. Those are the only two I know about, hope that helped.

However, some cities are working on having free wifi for the city by mounting wifi transmitters every couple blocks on top of signal lights. If your city is doing this then you could have free wifi just with a wireless card.

well there is an option of having the wireless service and if there are "leaks" in your neighborhood you can ride on some one elses LOL for freeeeeee
