I posted this elsewhere a few years back and I thought I'd share it here. Maybe it will help somebody take that first step.

So many times I log into bb forums. Sometimes searching for knowledge, sometimes searching for motivation. Other times I want to read about somebody's success or their inspirations. So often bros have come forward to lend a helping hand in every aspect of fitness and I've always looked forward to the day that I could extend my hand and help somebody in need.

Quite a few people drop by Powerbuilding.net. Some people post, yet a large number simply read and digest info. Some of these people are serious bodybuilders, some are intermediate, some beginners and then there are those I surmise that haven't taken that first step.
Out of the 1132 members and other guests, I'm guessing there is at least one person who will read this post that hasn't taken the first step. It is you that I want to understand something. You obviously are not comfortable with your physique or you wouldn't even be here. Whether you look like a rake or a mountain, you CAN change if you want to. We already know you want to because you're reading this. If I can do this, so can you. A couple years ago I was a fat slob, professional couch potato, smoking like crazy, etc.. Now - I'm still overweight ( that's encouraging !! ) but let me tell you it's changing big time.

First, stop making excuses. Laziness is just not acceptable. Can't put on the weight? Read the board, ask the vets and JUST DO IT. Can't lose the weight - gonna miss that big ol' bag of chips, that cigarette that your smoking right now? Ask yourself - what is more important to you. You've seen the guys whose physique you admire yet you wear the baggy clothes so perhaps people won't notice that gut hanging over your belt. They do. Trust me. When was the last time you went swimming? Has it been awhile cos you're ashamed to take off your shirt? A buddy of mine loves basketball - loves the game immensely but won't play when the guys get together because he's afraid that he'll end up on the "skins" team. Is that you too? If you can't take your shirt off in front of the guys you sure as heck can't take it off in front of the girls. Been to the beach lately watching everyone in their swimwear while you sit there in your baggy shirt?
Hey - listen to me - you do not have to!!!!
You have two choices. Do nothing - next summer and ALL the summers after that - you are going to be in the exact same predictament that you are in right now. Or you can do something. Next summer and for the rest of your life you can smile as the world sees you with a better body. More importantly, when you look in the mirror YOU see it. "But I don't want to go to the gym, they're all so fit and I'll look out of place". Bullshit. The gym consists of two kinds of people. People like you and people who used to look like you. They know where you're coming from.

All I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry - there just aren't any excuses anymore. Finish the cigarette and enjoy that last draw. Then break the rest and throw them away. Start following advice from the vets if you need to gain weight and if you need to lose it - turn off the computer and go out for a walk - RIGHT NOW. That's a start. You want to change cos you're here so get off your butt and JUST DO IT. Nobody in the world can do this for you. You can though and you know something? It feels gggrrreeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttt. Damn I sound like Tony the Tiger.

Just do it.

Outta 1132 +, maybe somebody can benefit from this. This is one area that I can relate to. I'm hoping this helps somebody. If I'm wrong and every single person here is actively pushing themselves to attain the body they've always dreamed of - then I've wasted 5 mins of your time for reading it and an hour of mine for writing it. Maybe though there's just one.

"I'll start next Monday". If you say I'll start tomorrow and you've used a million excuses to not start already, chances are you'll find another excuse before tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. Do it now.

Another thing worth mentioning is confidence. Speaking from personal experience and talking with others in similar situations to myself, self confidence can be lacking sometimes because of being overweight. Do you have even the slightest idea how wonderful you are going to feel when somebody tells you that you've gotten bigger or in my case that you've got weight gone? Let me tell you, it's priceless. If I knew the psychological advantages of getting off your butt and doing something - hell, I would have done this 20 years ago. But it's not gonna stop here. You will get more and more compliments. Your renewed self confidence is going to carry on into other aspects of your life. Not only will you feel better but you will also see dramtic improvements in your personal life, your family life, your business/career, your social life. There are so many rewards for getting off your butt. Tell me, what are the rewards for doing nothing. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and draw two columns. On one side list all the benefits of doing something. On the other side list the benefits of doing nothing. BE HONEST. Compare the lists. I think you'll shock yourself.

Just start and start now. Everybody here will help you through it, but you have to start. Nothing happens unless you start and you CAN DO IT. I'm proof of that.

You've been lying on your bed or sofa in the past wishing, fantasizing about having a better physique. Well, it's time to stop dreaming and make your future a whole lot brighter.

We're all behind you.
