A Quick story and a reminder about safety and this easily could have been anyone of us here!
So just a reminder to please be safe and watch everyone on the roads including yourself!
Ok I consider myself somewhat of a professional driver to a point, due to the fact I have to drive all over several states (5) around here doing Walmarts, Grocery store and Convenience store and other Super Market Refrigeration and have for many,many years (over 20) and never,ever had a accident on the job as far as my company vehicle goes, Actually hadn't had anything other than one speeding ticket since 1986.
Well 5 years ago tomorrow on the morning of "Black Friday" is when it all went down.. I had been living with my Mother taking care of her and my Dad for past three months after she had fell and broke her pelvis and was just getting over a knee replacement a few weeks prior to the pelvis break. Well I had been up since early kinda like today 3 am Thanksgiving Day so I starting the turkey,ham,dressing etc and all the other stuff for a really nice Thanksgiving day meal for my elderly parents and wife & kids my oldest brother & his family, since Mom had always done this for the whole family and had cook professionally all of her life it was a pretty big to do at "Grandmothers House" so I had some really big shoes to fill that particular Thanksgiving Day to pull off a Nice Thanksgiving Day meal for everyone.
So I got up and started early I put my Turkey and Ham in the oven and started my eggs boiling to make deviled eggs,etc when about 7 am the phone rang well at first I didn't think much of it actually thought it was the wife since I always spoke to her first thing every morning and last thing before bed at nights. My first thought well she's up kinda early today I hope her and the kids are ok, Well I answer it and it's my aunt my mothers sister Diane we all call her Dot. She was crying in a real frantic voice telling me she needed my help and she had fell and hurt herself so I try to calm her down and tell her I'm on the way knowing since she only lived 10 miles away from Mom I run and tell Mom the deal and take off up toward her house hauling ass!
Well I get there and let myself in and there she lays near the back door where she had crawled to the phone and I tried to pick her up and she started screaming bloody murder then I felt her legs and hip area but couldn't tell anything but assumed she has cracked a bone from the pain she was in, So I called the ambulance to take her to the hospital and once they get her in there heading that way I call Mom and fill her in and she insist on going to the hospital with me to see her.
I go back to moms and get her ready and go to the hospital and after all the test she had broke her hip, Well that made one less guest on my list since they had to do surgery. Ok at this point I'm thinking Now just how the hell am I going to get all the food cooked,Sit at the hospital with Mom until the surgery was over and tend to the guest etc..
So I call my wife back and get her to come to Moms and check on Dad and all my food in the oven well to make this short asap. I get mom back in the wheel chair and back home to rest since the surgery was going to be later that day and I finish the Thanksgiving Day meal and get everyone fed and on their way back to their homes.
In the meantime the wife helps mom get cleaned up and ready to go back to the hospital for dots surgery and everything goes as planned and she gets through the surgery and all is as good as it could be all things considered so once she gets done and put in her room I take mom back home and settled in for the night, finish wrapping things up from Dinner, Putting away dishes etc, That the wife and kids had done and plan on catching a quick nap before I had to get back up at 3am friday for the "Black Friday" shopping trip my wife and I had planned..
Since things were tight money wise it seems somewhat important to get to walmart early to catch the sales since I needed one of the laptops they had on sale that day.. Well here's where things started to fall apart more so than they already had.
Instead of just meeting the wife at walmart in the state I was in I thought I would drive back to my house in the next state over 25 miles no big deal right. keeping in mind I had only got a cat nap when sitting at the hospital while waiting on aunt dot to get out of surgery, So I make it home take a quick shower and decide to get the wife to drive her own ride and just meet me there so I could just go on from walmart back on up moms and take care of her then crash out for the day..
Ok I start to walmart and I start dozing off to sleep while driving so I pull over and get out in the cold morning air and it was cold to it was almost 5am and almost a balmy 15 deg so I shake it off and start driving again and once again I start falling asleep while driving and since I had drove for so many years I knew how serious this was so I just call the wife and get her to meet me at the gas station and grab some money and tell her to get me a laptop for our daughter and I was going to go back to our house and go to sleep that I couldn't stay awake and I needed to rest so I would be able to care for Mom once I got back to her house.. So she took the cash and I start back home falling alseep about every 2 or 3 miles well I started trying everything I rolled the windows down thinking the blast chill of cold air would do the trick "NOT" So I cranked up the sterio thinking that would help "NOT"
Ok I was home free! I had made it almost home I only had 2 miles to go and I guess my body either just gave out or I just relaxed knowing I was getting close and would be fine well in a couple of minutes, Well I rounded the last curve before a 1/2 mile straight stretch then my driveway that's when I felt it! I FELT THE AIR BAGS BUSTING ME IN THE MOUTH, And knocked out my 2 front top teeth and loosen dam near all others in the front and had chipped one of the side teeth were I had bit down on them, I had fell asleep and ran into the neighbor a brand new dodge dually he had seen me coming and drifting over in his lane and he veerved over to miss me as much as he could and I hit him right in his back tires, I hit him so hard it knocked the entire axel assembly 4 tires and all out from under the truck up on another neighbors front porch!!!
The neighbor ladys yard I crashed into was sitting in her car warming it up for work and she was a ER Nurse and keep saying you need to sit down, you need to sit down, Well needless to say I didn't sit down.. I went to the passenger mirrow and put my teeth back in and bit down on them to seat the teeth and she got all pail and said I think I need to sit down lol .. I was laughing my ass of at her since I had already knew no one was hurt other than me and she was freaking out over a little blood and she was a er nurse..lol She said I've never in my life ever seen anyone put their own teeth back in like that it kinda shocked me..lol I said well I don't guess you were in many fights when you were young, And growing up with 2 older brother and getting my ass kicked daily it really didn't seem like a big deal to me. But the teeth took root and are still doing good today, Only thing that happend was I had to get a crown for the chipped one..
The moral to the story it just goes to show no matter now many years you have drove or how good you think you are you just never know when a accident could happen to you, And it's not always your driving it everyone else it need to watch!
