Thinking of switching my whole regime up as to prepare me for the work season. Gonna train HIT cardio 3 days a week before breakfast. Also I'm thinking of throwing my weight training in the morning too. Also before breakfast I'm thinking. Now I know it goes against the grain, but what are you guys thoughts. Normally I train evenings, sometimes even at 9pm, after being well fed throughout the day, but I think this will fit my lifestyle a little better, and give me more time to myself at the end of the day. I'm thinking better nutrient absorption after a fasted workout, and better fat burning, as there's nothing for your body to burn but fat for fuel, at least in theory. Thoughts?

i always have that thought until i wake up then i say forget that lol,but i would NEVER weight train fasted....i used to do cardio on an empty stomach first thing in the morning but i would lift later in the day....

I don't eat until noon, but train in the mornings. I can honestly say I've never noticed the difference in my workout. Plenty of calories to burn from the night before. Now if morning for you 11:00AM, you might get gassed.

I know it's unorthodox, but in theory you would think it would be no different than training cardio on an empty stomach. Your muscles do not have any glycogen stores to deplete, so it has to burn fat during an intense workout, plus your hormone levels are highest in the morning. Get a good breakfast immediately after your workout, and your body should be primed for nutrient absorption. In theory. I can't picture your body metabolizing muscle tissue, if you're getting adequate nutrients and calories throughout the day. I'm just curious if anyone else has thought this before?

it sounds good in theory but i would probably probably have at least a 20 gram whey/20 gram oats with water a half hr before i just have always been skeptical about training on an empty stomach

I'm sure you can make it work out for you, I myself can't get away with it.. I do my cardio first thing in the morning on a empty stomach to burn fat but I couldn't get away with weight training on a empty belly or I'd fall out..
I wait until I least get 2 or maybe 3 meals in me before I train because anymore it takes me sometimes 2 hours to train if I did it on a empty stomach my workouts would suffer big time!

So definitely not gonna train fasted. I got up, thought about it, and just could not go to the gym without eating. Borderline impossible when I know I'm gonna hit it hard. It sounded good in theory to me, but it's not practical. Cardio yes, lifting no. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm gonna stick to what I've known for years, just do it earlier.

sounds good buddy..........

I used to train at 6am with my Father when he was still alive. I'd carb and coffee up, train for about an hour or a bit longer. Then go back to Dad's house, protein shakes, shower, go to work. I didn't make a lot of progress in size or strength. And my work days sucked.
Now I train evenings after work. I'm stronger, growing better, even at my age. And no more shakes, but a real post training meal. The only drawback, some days I'm too tired to train.
So there's plusses and minuses to each.

A few years ago I tried training before work, at about 5:00a.m. That lasted about two weeks. Just couldn't get into it mentally or physically at that hour. I'm sure that after a longer adjustment period, I could have become accustomed to it but waking up at 4:15 knowing that 45 minutes later I'd be trying to lift didn't work in my head.

That's exactly it. The mentality that early. It's hard for me to focus that early when I'm not fed. At least I tried, so now I know. different strokes for different folks

i agree completely bro...its just too damn early for me my mind just cant process it..........

4am workouts for me.....learn it live it love it.....

As you well know I'm up at 4am everyday but it's the only time I can enjoy my piece and quiet before all hell breaks lose! I can get in a couple hours of reading and checking the boards and email but I'd never be able to hit the GYM and get much done....

I have always trained at 4:45am in the morning. I get up and drink coffee and eat a piece of toast and head to gym....
regardless of what rumors are , or theorys are or any columns or write ups say about dont do that ,I do it .I have amazing photos and proof that working in the a.m. with coffee and a piece of toast will yield amzing results.....but I do eat and drink a shake immediatly post workout .
Im more of a morning person than an afternoon person so it fits my schedule better as well as doesnt take time away from the family .

insulin levels are lowest on a fast, glycogen levels in muscle are not. it can take up to 36 hours depending on source for carbs to be synthesized and stored. this is why some endurance athletes start loading up 48 hours out of event. you will be fine. your body will always tell you what you need if you listen

there are also some really good studies showing the benefit of training in fasted state (8-12 hr). hyper nutrient partitioning in favor of muscle
