There are generally 2 schools of thought regarding weight (fat) gain and maintaining lean mass. One is simply calries in shouldn't exceed your daily caloric requirement. The other is more about the types of foods you eat and their affect on your blood sugar levels. I personally believe in the blood sugar theory.
I suffered a significant back injury at the end of last summer (recurring due to a deteriorated L5 disk) and let myself and diet go down the drain. I started training hard and strictly dieting again a couple of weeks ago and so far the results are almost unbelievable. 3 weeks ago I was 188lbs and 18.9% BF. I've been eating like a diabetic (literally) and already dropped 7 lbs and am at 15.3%.
I have learned A LOT about nutrition over the last couple of years and everytime I think I know everything that I need to know, I learn something else. It's been a great experience on the forum here (and a couple of others), talking, reading and learning about nutrition.
I recently got my hands on a blood glucose meter and it has helped tremendously. Foods that I thought were OK to eat had a terrible effect on my blood sugar and I didn't realize this until I started with the meter.
For anyone who's cutting, I seriously recommed getting a meter to monitor your blood sugar. If anyone's interested, I'll start a log of my sugar levels and my progress toward 10% BF.
To everyone that has written, corresponded and helped with nutrition (and everything else)... THANK YOU!
