Bad News

Got some really bad news yesterday. After being with this new company for three years and being in the paper industry for almost 20 years. Company cutbacks have eliminated my postion. I now join the millions of Americans that are unemployed. This is the first time since I was sixteen that I haven't had a job, I gotta tell you guys it's pretty depressing.
I woke up this morning at 5AM like I always do only to grab a paper to start looking. After all I have three kids to support. Anyway, I'm going to bust my butt trying to find work. I'll be OK for about a month then it's gonna get rough. If you guys see, or hear of any quality, warehouse, or production manager position please don't hesitate to shoot me a e-mail........

Sorry to hear that bro. If you can't find something you've been doing for a while now, you might want to consider some sort of craft to get into skilled labor that would be in demand right now. Look for companies with government contracts. One area I know you could probably get hired in is as a certified welder. Those guys are always in demand, especially in certain areas of the country, or up in Alberta if you feel like venturing north. In any case, good luck with everything dude
 
I also hate to hear this....can you draw unemployment or maybe off a 401k or retirement if things get dire....good luck
 
Sorry to hear the bad news too. Start cutting your expenses to the bone NOW so that your savings last longer. Good advice from J. Matrix about government contractors. What area of the country are you in?

Thanks bro! I use to weld as a matter of fact. Before I went into the paper industry. May have to venture back in if nothing comes up. I can draw unemployment, but right now I want to focus on finding work. Living in Alabama, but I do have contacts throughout the country in the paper industry, so hopefully something will come up. The issue is everyone is hurting because every company is hurting. Before I starve or have my kids go without I'll join the military, even as bad as that would be (for me) being away from my kids........

If not anyone need a source, hell I'll just move to central america and take orders all day (lol). It'll get better and I'm staying positive at this point. Even being off for one day sucks. The mental part is hard to deal with right now. Just trying to let it settle in a bit.

im sorry to hear that times are getting really hard.. but remember to keep your head up you'll find something just keep looking around
 
If you're around Alabama, you're near the Gulf which isn't a bad spot at all to be a welder. Welding pipeline or for one of the oil companies pays good money. It depends on where you are in the country though. For example, here (central OH) a welder usually gets around 13-20ish bucks an hour. A guy I worked with last summer welded pipeline up in Alaska making almost 100 bucks an hour. Alberta is currently the mecca of welding/engineering in general due to their oil sands.

The great thing about welding is it is almost always in demand. Hell my grandpa lived through the great depression as a welder and (he said) made it through comfortably. Everywhere I've gone in this country I hear about how such-and-such company needs welders. I'd say definitely try to go with what you want to do. Having a skill like welding can be a great backup though
 
I drive from where I live to Dallas, TX from time to time and there is a place I pass that just built a brand new facility to manufacture large storage tanks. They've had a sign out for hiring welders for a long time. From what I understand, if you're a welder around here, you can do very well. And the cost of living is great. It's a small town pretty close to larger towns. If you're interested in relocating this way, I'd be happy to find you more info. Just let me know.
 
They are extending unemployment to damn near 1yr bro

Don't be too proud, take that time to try and find a job that you will actually enjoy.

Well I found a job today bros. I'm selling cars again. I had a lot years ago when I worked swing shift and had a lot of free day time I would sell cars. I'm selling Chev, Mitsubishi, Kia, and Hyundai. I had so much fun today and almost made two sells. I gonna feel this out for a month and see how things go, but I feel that I can do it. If this doesn't pan out I do have a few more options. I do appreciate everone's support and encouraging words and I promise to keep everyone posted. I know unemployment is up and it's hard for people to find work, but sometimes you have to break that shell and do something different. You guys are the best......

Good luck on the car sales.....Car lots are not even hiring around here....Ill be collecting that check starting the first of March......
 
Zeke, if you've got papers in welding, get that on your resume as they always need welders offshore. I was up in the office on Wednesday and the receptionist took a call from someone wanting work, she informed me that they're averaging 40+ calls pper day with people tryig to get work on one of our rigs. The fact that you're aa welder could help out.
 
Sorry to hear the bad news, and glad to hear the good news.
As a guy, it's always good to feel like you are being productive. You understand the troubles facing people in the economy, maybe you can translate that to your customers, reach common ground, and link up with those who have some cash and just want a new car.

On another note, my brother is a white collar recruiter and works for himself (when he's not skiing). I could get you his email and see where things go. He's been doing it for over ten years and has a lot of connections. He has placed people in all four sectors of the USA (NE, SE, NW, SW).

On the subject of welding, since you are in Alabama. In the gulf under water welders get paid a grip. A buddy of mine is working down there right now and he gets paid an insane amount of money. Of course you have to be able to SCUBA, but they pay by depth. He said some days he comes home making over a grand.

dude thats no joke. My buddy does the same in the gulf and does very well for himself cosnsiering he only works a few weeks at a time. And them he comes home for a couple months.

Yeah you can definitely make a ton of money doing it in the right places. The worse part about the job is the environment though. It's usually a real tough, dangerous (at times) job, but you definitely earn the money you make.
 
Sorry to hear Zeke...I'm in the same boat...factory I worked at for 22 years closed the doors end of Dec. I'm getting unemployment now and the company adds to that some also, so not so bad here NOW. I lucked out myself in that being I worked there over 20 years, a clause in the contract allows me to file for pension now. However, the pension amount is only about 50% of my normal salary. So when unemployment runs out, that wont cut it here in the USA. I'm seriously considering moving to the Philippines...where 1k a month you can live like a king...and not work again. DPH, a gym with some iron, and a few young gorgeous pinays at the beach..I can dig it. lol :p

Yes, it can be dangerous. Depending on where and at what level you are working. Right in the delta of the mississippi the water is extremely murky so at times you can't see more than a foot in front of your face.

He told me about trying to find the pipeline he had to weld by using a long metal pole to "probe" in the murk.

But the money is well worth it he said.. And besides that point it is warm down there right now. ( it's still 20deg here )

If you don't already have SCUBA certification you can get that in less than a week.

I did it years ago (shift workers have time on their hands) and forgot how fun it can be. I do believe the place I'm at will do well. There has been a great deal of turn over which worries me a bit, but as far as personal ability I'm staying optimistic. I believe I have another deal going through tomorrow. This group sells Chevy, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, VW, Kia, Hyundai and coming in the next three months Cadilac. They are a huge company and even though I'm based at the chevy dealership I can show any car within the entire group. I do hope it works out.
I can't tell you guys how much your support helps. I love this board!!!
