New study that shows glaucoma is becoming more common amongst 'weightlifters'. People now-a-days lifting more weight than in the past and with heavier weights causes people to momentarily stop breathing. I, along with I'm sure every powerlifter is guilty in one way or another. I know with heavy deads and squats, I try and get a rythmic breathing going but still see stars after the set at times. By holding your breath throughout the lift puts serious stress and pressure on your eyes, which in turn may cause glaucoma. I try and yell in between reps, to make sure i'm breathing.

I don't think it's as common as the article I read stated since I have never met one pesron out of hundreds who lift heavy and formed glaucoma.

I read the same article. The pressure from pushing builds up in your eyes. In the article many people had been documented going blind from it later in life.

Just like having a baby, you need to BREATHE when your pushing ! !

anything is posible i guess but one of my old training partners who has moved was in a powerlifting contest just a month or so ago and since i was there he asked me to lift off/spot for him . i did spend some time with him , went out to eat , etc. and i did notice he doesnt wear glasses . this was his
107TH powerlifting contest and hes about to turn 60 .:eek2:
some of the studies that pop up just amaze me lol

See, that's what I'm talking about. I don't believe it's all as common as the "experts" say. I'm sure it 'could' happen, but not very often. I actually just saw it in the news last night as well!!!!

I think there are many good reasons to breathe properly while executing a heavy lift. I've heard of people popping blood vessels in their eyes before.. But even that is in a very rare occasion..

I also yell during heavy lifts, not on purpose, just because it's damn heavy. LOL

lol!! yep. I try to breath but again, its very hard when you got heavy ass weight on your back!! You cant remember breathing AND not killing yourself at the same time!

I try hard though i do know the stars feeling tho:lue:

read the same article i think in the new york post im not sure makes sense to me and i asked my sister who is a doctor she confirmed it to me

And all this time I thought I was going blind from jerking off too much.

I popped a bv in my eye during a deadlift max. I tend to hold my breathe from half way up and to the hitch. Plus when I max, I always wear a belt doing deads, and the belt sort of squeezes the air right out of you

try wearing the belt 1-2 notches looser and use your gut/abs to push out against the belt and build up that internal pressure .

I've busted ribs squatting heavy from pushing out so hard while breathing. Heavy lifters typically have an abdominal wall that is 3x thicker than that of the average joe.
