Building new muscle after 40

Here is a serious question for the board. Building new muscle after the age of say fifty. I was once told by a body building friend of mine, that after a certain age you can no longer build new muscle. He said you can always get back the muscle you once had but you would never get any bigger then the biggest you ever were. I was hoping this isn't true. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Ive herd stuff too...like you already have all the muscle tissue your going to get. Not sure thats right...someone one here will probably tell us.

But lets repose your question: Can I get big or...bigger? That depends on you.
Lots figures into that yes like your diet, your workout, your testosterone levels.

If you've never worked out before 40 it will be harder than if you started at 18. I started at 33.

I think gaining size after 40-50-60 is possible. You wont look like a 20 year old but who cares?

Yeah I hear ya Willi
I have been at it since a teenager on and off. Mostly on. I have had some good size in my day but never satisfied. Always wanted to get bigger. And that is where I am at now. I want to get bigger then ever. I train hard five days a week but I wonder if I am chasing a dream. Hope some of the guys here comment.
P.S Old muscle looks better than young muscle.

Studies in VA facilities show that new muscle can be built even at age 80.

I know thats true and Im counting on that. I absolutely love it when I see a 60 or 70 something that looks great. Good for them and Im not giving up.

Its all about not letting the house go to ruin.

Tell your friend that he's full of shit bro haha! You can gain muscle and look like a freak well into your 40's, 50's and probably 60's on some TRT/HRT. Hell I'm 49, OFF and look jacked fosho. Bufbiker is 58, weighs 270 hard, benches 550+ and squats 750+ RAW. Many on this board are into late 40's & 50's and more jacked than ever. All you need to do is stop THINKING about your age, bust ass in the gym, eat right and grow. Best tip I could give you is warmup more before your heavy shit to prevent injury. :igok:

Yen years ago (when I was 43) I weighed 245 and could do 26 pull-ups, but with all the quality work I was able to do between injuries has allowed me the freedom to get the physique I wanted instead just a big block with a 38 waist.
Bigger is cool for awhile but remember you have to feed that as well. I got up to 265 and looked fat as hell.
See who the real you is trying to come out.
Be you for you.
Good luck!

That is not true. I am living proof at 58. Over the last four years I have grown. I am stronger than ever, just hit 525 for two reps on flat bench earlier tonight, and I am still growing, even though I don't want to get any bigger.

Muscles have stem cells and they last pretty much a lifetime. The problem is when you are natti all the other grow juices dry up like GH, Test, metabolism goes a rye. Using GH and androgens and a good diet.. different story all together.

I hope so! I am approaching 40 :(

This right here is essential!

50 here and even though the ol "ball-bag" hangs much lower than it did 25 years ago, I still see improvements from month to month. Roughly 5 years ago I was 232 at 12%. I'm sitting at 12% now at 254lbs. So I would say ones potential for new mass after 40 is quite possible. I have noticed that as I get older, more intense and shorter duration workouts seem to be the ticket, as well as a stricter diet. Seems like the shadow of my ass puts on 60lbs just taking a weekend off to "nosh".
