The truth...
While the math says 3,500 calories comprises a pound of fat, the real truth is you have to burn 3,500 calories without compromising your metabolism. You probably know someone who eats lie a rabbit and hits the treadmill daily yet never drops a pound of dobyfat. Why the fuzzy math? In a word overkill. Too few calories and excessive expenditure creates expenditure a metabolic meltdown, yieiding a slower metabolic rate. This explains how it's posible to exercise like a maniac yet fall to see a drop in bodyfat.

What to do...

just 250-300 calories a day from your diet. In 12days, you'll drop a pound. Or, without cutting calories, expend an exra 300 calories a day for 10days and you'll be close to 3,500. Become overzealous and try to cut out 3,500 calories over just a few days, and much of the loss will be muscle. Unless you're trying to look like Manute Bol, that's not exactly a good thing...

but you dont always get to choose if its fat or muscle.

your body uses fat as its main source of energy at lower intensity exertions like cardio, but it almsot exclusively uses glycogen stored from carbs at higher intensity exertions. Then after that is gone it burns up some muscle - ick
