Chondroitin sulfate

The claim: Chondroitin is a component of human cartilage and bones (the supplement is made from animals) that eases pain and inflammation and improves mobility.

The science: Two large studies back these claims, though pain relief may take several months. No studies have proven that it reverses cartilage damage. Chondroitin can thin the blood, so it should not be taken with blood-thinning medication, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or Aleve, because they also can thin the blood.

Glucosamine sulfate

The claim: Taken as a capsule or mixed in powder form into a drink, it slows cartilage deterioration and improves pain and joint mobility.

The science: Several studies back these claims, finding glucosamine sulfate to be effective, though pain-killing results may take longer than with NSAIDs. Many physicians recommend 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate a day for their patients with osteoarthritis. Because it's made from shellfish shells, people allergic to shellfish must avoid it.

I never knew this before....I take Ibuprofen all the time and I take glucosamine and chondroitin. I need to up the dosage of G & C though. Just as well to stop the Ibuprofen cause it does shit all for me. I also take Celebrex- only 100 mg/day. I need more than that. I have to see my doc next week about my knee x-ray- he'll probably tell me to increase it.

Holy shit, I never knew that either thanks IG. I try to not take too much Ibuprofen mainly because it can increase your BP.

well I just cant really afford to buy whatever new supps are out to give them a try is all. I wish I knew where to find more evidence than just hear say

I know, I hear ya!!

I was also wondering. I was doing some reading on glucosamine, and it said to buy the highest grade of it that you can. How do you know this??

I agree with BW..dont' think I'd be able to squat that often if I didn't take these

I got some glucosamine chondroitin today that are chewables. Are these as good as pill form? Each one has 500mg glucosamine and 400mg chondroitin sulfate, so I'm going to try 2 a day and see how it works. They are made by Spring Valley.
