for a beginner to the weights, should you cut first and see what your working with. or bulk up and let the new muscle growth eat up the excess calories you were holding. my cousin started comin to the gym with me and I think he could easily lose 30lbs of fat off his 220lbs but he's been told by others to lift heavy and eat alot. so he dosent wanna listen to me and I dont really know what to tell him. what is best for a beginner you think? I like to see what I got, and where I'm going. but thats just me, others say the body reacts so well at first to free weights that you should take advantage of this and start off heavy and heavy on the feedings. just wanna hear what others think.

If he is truly a beginner, I wouldn't have him going heavy right off the bat. Get him to learn the basic lifts with proper technique, and learn the basics of eating. Get him to eat clean foods every few hours, etc. before getting matters too complicated for him that he gives up. Gradually introduce things to him, don't discourage him. After a couple of months if he is still dedicated, I would have him on a below maintenance diet as 30lbs of fat is not acceptable imo.

Depends on his goals. Don't know if hes 16 and on the offensive line, or if hes 35 and wanting to lean out. Need more info to tell you the plan. How tall is he? 220 on a 5'7 dude is much different than 220 on a 6'3 guy. Also you say YOU think he could easily lose 30lbs...opinions vary dude, so tell us a reasonable guestimate of his bf%.

+1

My rule is, if you can't see any abs at start cutting. I bulked before I cut, that was a big mistake and a wasted year imo, always cut first. It took for ever for my skin to tighten, If I had cut then bulked I would have turned out much tighter and in less time overall.

bro is like 5'9 at 220, he's 29 and he wants to get 'jacked' as he puts it. he's got a pot belly so I dont know whether he should try to cut, which could be hard on a beginner, or should he just lift heavy, eat healthy and it will probably lean him out all that goin to the gym. I dont know what is the right way to start him out. OLY said once, that its better to lean out first I think? or some shit like that
