Damn!

I have dropped a bar on my chest when I was 19-20 but it was only 175 is I think. And luckily I was ok. At 31 I don't even consider benching with a death grip. Just too scared. Not worth a few extra reps.

It does give a better activation of the pec muscles unfortunately .

I never used suicide grip with a barbell bcoz I usually worked out solo. Sometimes I would on a Smith, but I'm just so used to normal grip, so I just stick with that. I would think the kid probably used suicide grip for that to happen. Sad.

I read this the other day. Sucks. You see powerlifters using that grip all the time, and I am guilty of using that grip before. There's plenty of videos of the weight just slipping from their hands and on their chest. Ouchhh! Spotters or not, I don't think anyone has the reaction time fast enough to grab a bar that has slipped before hitting the person. It is too fast, it takes a second for your brain to register what happened before you can react. I use dumbbells for everything now since I was pulling my chest all the time with the barbell.

A good spotter should have his hand just below the bar always ready to engage. They are there to spot not only when the strength fails but also in case some emergency happens.

That's why I always refuse to spot anyone in the gym now.. I don't want that responsibility nor do I want either of us to get injured. People probably think I am an unfriendly person, but the way I see it, if u need a spot take off a few pounds and lift light or bring a friend.
