Should I be? My strength is finally starting to come back up, and I'd like to know what benefit there is to wearing one? I use straps now, as my grip gives out far sooner than my back. Should I invest in a belt?

Well, I never used a belt in my younger years but now that I am older I wear a belt for any exercise that may put strain on my lower back. You don't want to ever over wear a belt, basically it will cause you lower back muscles to weaken and basically become dependent on the belt. I basically only wear a belt for squats, hacks, any form of deadlifts and heavy trap work.

I used to not wear them until I got up over 500lbs. but now as a senior citizen who still deads 750+ I wear a belt. Last time I didn't I had to push my intestines back into my belly through my belly button.

I love belts. the only problem is THEY SIGNIFICANTLY increase hernias. Onetime I just felt my intestines trying to push my abdominal muscles to come out. After that i have never used and will never use a belt again. I rather lift 50 lbs less without a belt and controlled form than have to go through a hernia repair and sit out 8 weeks from lifting.

Heavy lifts yes. Light lifts no. You don't need you're lower back to become reliant on a weight belt

I guess the reason I'm asking is lately I have been having lower back pain. I was re-doing a deck and spent most of the day bending over, and by the end of the night just walking was taking my breathe away. Right now I'm deadlifting in the 500 range, that weight has kind of gone up quickly as while I was cutting I was struggling big time to hit 405. I also have a minor hernia, have had it for years. I get a pretty good sized bulge in my midsection when the weight goes up.

I don't like a belt for deadlift, but i do it to work my lower back so my weight isn't quite as high. Plus the one time i did wear a belt it just dug in, maybe a deadlift specific belt would have been better.

Seems like a bad idea with a hernia. The belt is just going to increase pressure and you don't want that hernia popping like a zit.

Anything over 315 I use a belt ,thats for Deadlifts and Squats ,I as well use straps while deadlifting I have found the straps keeps my focus where it needs to be rather than worrying about loseing grip .

I train as a powerlifter so I do use a belt with heavy squats and deads. I don't put it on until I'm pulling 450-500lb depending on how it feels, and squatting over 400lb all the time

I use mine over 405. Well 405 and up. But with all my injuries I'm not going past that ever. Again. Lol

My belly button resembles a purple marshmallow when I don't use a belt.

Ever since I hurt my lumbar, using a belt tends to increase the chance or reinjury.
Reasoning (wrought from experience): Belt gives me a false sense of security, causing me to relax the lumbar and push out on the belt, putting pressure on the lumbar region. General Result: Injures my lumbar and reduces developing stabilizer muscles surrounding my low back (which is what I really need for protection of the area).
I've been letting the weakest link control the weight, but have been doing many multi-joint exercises, thereby hoping to improve all-over stability and function.
Max deadlift days are done for me.
Good luck!

Sounds like you have a hernia :)

I'm pretty sure using a belt on heavy squats helped contribute to both of mine (in the groin). Before i stopped it would kinda feel like i got kicked in the nads after squats from intestines bulging onto the nerves and whatnot. Feeling much better and less concerned now that both sides got patched up. Haven't gotten up to doing any heavy lifting again yet.

heres something weird about my own personal experiences with a belt. i use to use it while deadlifting until i found out it was holding me bac. twice i went for my all time max with a belt 1st which is 585 and couldnt hit it. once i took it off, boom that bitch xcame up. i do uise it with squats sometimes jus to keep my form tight and sometimes with heavy ass rows 275 or up
