hey, I have been looking around at all the places I go to lately for a job (tried abercrombie, AE, Express for men, but they never call me back after the interview or when I follow up,even during the holidays :( ) I was thinking of maybe trying to get a job at a gym since I have been into bbing for a year now and am getting really serious about it. anybody here ever work at one before (not as a trainer or anything) What kind of things do you have to do if you work at one?

never worked at one.... but i see the employees at my gym putting weights back, answering phones, signing up new members and making protein shakes. thats about it...

I worked 4 years as a PT and one year as manager. Like Ura said putting weights back, answering phones, signing up new members and making protein shakes. Showing people how to use equipment. Making sure bathroom are clean and stocked with TP ect......Very simple, clean work.:)

thats what im looking at it as (student job) Im starting at a comm. college near home this jan and wanted a job to get some extra cash (lol im 21 and never had a job, i think thats why none of the places will give me a chance for some reason) but I thought it would be a great job as a part time.

The most important skills needed are customer service and community relations. I would keep trying out various gyms, perhaps the ones that you applied at, had a full roster. In the meantime learn as much as you possibaly can about the health and fitness fields. Take a course and become a CPT, that's an important step toward gym employment.

I worked in my gym back home during high school. It was volunteer working but I put in 15+ hours a week. There was no hired staff to run the gym, so volunteers were brought in and given a free membership in return. basically I ran the desk, sold memberships, cleaned up the weights, mirrors and bathrooms, made sure towels were always avaliable, answered questions people had about equipment and how to use them, answered phones and at the end of the shift tallied up the money and wiped down all the equipment.
Basically they look for a responsible individuel with a background in training(to aid people), I didnt require a ceriftication however. Having good communication skills is also a huge asset.

yup, and it sux if you ask me. I hated working at Golds, I was always at work even when I wasnt working....It made me hate training because i was always there. Plus the pay sucked and I felt like a sweat Jocky. I only took the job to cut out my membership fees.:)

i didnt mind working at the gym. it was an afterschool sort of job, would do my homework there, finsih my shift, train and then go home. worked out good, studies and training both got done and didnt have to pay for ungodly membership fees.
