I knew I had a heart murmer since I had surgery at 14 years old. I have never had a problem with it.
When I had my surgery on Friday, I was examined by a doctor that was working with my surgeon, and I told him before he listened to my chest. He explained to me afterwards that I have "mitral valve prolapse". The mitral valve in my heart is "floppy" and does not close properly, allowing some blood to go backwards. The heart works normally, and this prolapse usually does not worsen over time.
The interesting thing that he told me about it, is that if I am having surgery or dental work that may involve excessive beeding, I may have to take an antibiotic beforehand because there is the possibility that I may get an infection of the mitral valve, which is rare but very serious and difficult to treat.
Well, I was very impressed that this was all explained to me- after all these years!!! Now I am after having 3 major surgeries and dental work that could have caused excessive bleeding. Holy jesus- that was an eye opener. I am going to talk to one of the docs when I get back to work to see if I should have further testing to definitely confirm this, etc. And some people need meds because of the prolapse. It would be nice to have this all looked after to make sure nothing happens to me
