I had yet another interview yesterday with Brinks Inc. For an armored truck crew member.

Ok I made it thru all the bullshit, background checks etc etc......

Now tell me, what would you guess this job would pay? Keep in mind, you wear a bullet proof vest, you carry a firearm, you are personally responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time. You are under camera surveilance all the time, etc.....etc.....

I was pumped, I thought this would be a kick ass job. Well I get in there yesterday and they offer me the job and wanted me to start on the 21st of this month.

And offered me $12 bucks an hour............!!!!!!!!

I about shit right there, what a damn joke! and you had to work for a full year to get a raise to $12.50, then 3 years to get to $13.

I was so pissed I wasted all this time for nothing, that company sucks!!!!!

Tell me please, but why do companies actually think $12-13 bucks an hour is good pay?

I made $12.50 an hour back in 2000.............gimme a break people.

because Corp. Assholes have never worked at the bottom of the totem pole before. They don't know what its like to get paid $12 an hour.

its more than i currently make. how bout them apples? lol

but to be honest, i was expecting about 15 an hour or so. thats alot of responsibility for 12.

I really dont want to poor salt in your wound,

BUT

my 15 year old son gets paid $12.50/hr working at the local bagel store restocking the coolers and shelves.

He doesn't ever get to carry a gun ! ! LOL

i've made anywhere from 17.50-30bux an hour running my security crew. However, not very many hours and the work is not steady

Hmm. What are you striving for career-wise? Considering other avenues, industry-wise? If you're interested in working on the oil rigs let me know (avg. pay = ~2k/wk)... Good luck.

SC, I would consider anything that will get me with my family more........where do you live at?

I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and I'm assuming that's where SC lives as
the oil boom is in this province.

G4E, if you wanna make a ton of money in a trade job, come on up. It's
rumored all trade jobs will be starting at 6 figures a year within a year or so.
That's how hot this market is. Be warned though, cost of living is higher
and finding a place to live can be hard (and expensive).

We have 10,000 new people coming into the province a month, and still
have an estimated 100,000 jobs to fill. It's crazy.

SC, do you still train while working the rigs? I must be almost impossible to
keep, nonethless create any gains doing that work.

I worked for an armored car company in CA while going through college in the early 90's....got paid $7.00 an hour...part time of course...top pay was $9.00....

$12 an hour is crap... i used to make over $22 an hour waiting tables at a bbq restaurant when i was in college....its crap work, but the earning potential was nuts.. not something you can stick with long term though

I have been searching for a decent job since june 2005, coming upon the 2 year mark here real soon.............pretty depressing

Well, sometimes you just have to take what's in front of you till something better comes along.

Let me ask G4E.. Do you have a degree?

no degree brother........just 17 years of stable varied experience, was a local business owner for over 5 years of that

I have a buddie thats been looking hard for a while now too...things seem tight right now.

Your not working now? If not I think take whatever you can get...its seems to always be easier to find a job when you alredy have one. Good luck

yes I am working.........I took a job 19 months ago because I was forced to quickly get a job that offered insurance for the family. I was running a family business and my wife carried the family insurance, her place of employment closed up so I shopped around for insurance, it was quite staggering to buy it per month, my son has some health issues so I couldn't take a chance I took the first job could get to cover me with health insurance

BUT........like I said I just took the first thing that came along, now I have been searching ever since cause the job is on nites, 3:30pm to 2am, so I see my family very little.

so basically I am looking for a day job so I can be with my family

Really depends on the market where you live as well... my area (s florida) always has numerous job opportunities... also a major hub for many of the largest corporations in the country... someone is always hiring here.. cost of living isnt terrible, but varies greatly by the cost of the neighborhood

i could imagine that it could be very frustrating in other areas though

It's tough not having a degree. It really limits what you can do and it makes it difficult to find other options for employment. In the part of the country I'm in. $12 an hour is actually a decent paying job. Pretty sad huh?

You bet.

I don't work on the rigs though - I came out here with that intention last year, but instead, I'm doing Mech. Engineering (what I took in school). Made a leap forward for my career, so the extra 30k in 2007 wasn't enough for me to turn this position down. I will make it up by the end of 2008, with a much higher plateau in the long run...

Anyhow... G4E, my g/f recruits for the major oil EPC's, and engineering firms, so if you need a contact, I can help.

There's no way i could get by on $12 an hour. its just not practical to survive
I give you credit for being able to pull it off..

I actually make well over twice that.. But I'm educated. If I weren't, I'd probably be making only $10-12 per hour if I stayed in this part of the country

G4E ever think about trying a temp agency?? They can find some temp to hire jobs that are 30K+ a yr
