..as in Keep It Simple Stupid!lol I cant count the times I tell youngbloods at the gym who are always asking me for advice to get big. Nowdays I guess it can get rather confusing for the n00b out there aspiring to put on muscle. Just go pick up any muscle magazine and you will see why.lol Ads on every other page with BS supplements, training routines a pro is doing for pre-contest prep, etc etc. Soooo many try to make this game of putting on muscle like brain surgery. Its REALLY not!lol I can put a ton of beef on damn near anyone if they only did the BASICS, ie, squats, leg presses, deads, chins, barbell rows, T-bar rows, benches, inclines, dips, militaries, side laterals, skull crushers, barbell curls, etc. Couple that with enuff cals and macros, and rest, and thats it! BUT, how many can actually adhere to this advice? You would be surprised!lol I laid out a program for a bro last week...young dude 21. I see him in the gym 3 days later doing one arm cable pushdowns!lol WTF? Is it me?
Fact is, busting ass on the basics is hard work. Only the truly dedicated will stick with it for a prolonged amount of time. Thats the reason you see the ol' lonely squat rack over in the corner begging for attention 90% of the time. Even when one has been at this game for years, theres no reason to deviate...excluding variables such as injuries, tendon problems with age, etc. Sure, after we have kicked it for years and added a substantial amount of mass, we gotta perhaps tweak a few things to fit our own gig, priorites, etc. However, for the n00b trying to attain the maximum amount of muscle as fast as possible, there is NO excuse. I tell them literally "cables are for pussies and a waste of time!".
Additionally, due to the hype in the mags and hear-say, the n00b starts hearing "you must change things up regularly to keep growing!". They misconstrue that as changing to a complete new routine. WRONG!lol They, and many, fail to realize one little variable that indeed IS a variable that constitutes change...new STRENGTH! If Joe was using 200 x 10 on incline bb press 2 months ago, and now hes using 225 x 10 on it, then guess what? He HAS made a change in his routine!lol But, he now wants to switch up coz he thinks he NEEDS to change the actual exercises as thats what he heard, read, etc. You dont attempt to fix what is not broken. I see this all the time, and its probably one of the biggest mistakes being made in gyms today...too much change for the sake of it and not any reasoning behind it. Fact is, getting progressively stonger for reps in good form over time is THEE single most important variable at putting on muscle size. I guarantee you, if Joe was squatting 225 x 10 2years ago and now hes squatting 355 for 10, his quads are gonna be a SHITLOAD bigger than they were before.lol Again, its not brain surgery. And also again, it IS hard work. Not many have the will to kick it balls to the wall on the lifts that make you wanna puke, ie squats, deads, rows, etc year in and year out. Only the very few exceptionally genetically gifted like Wheeler, Dillet, etc can grow 22 inch pipes via 35 lb dumbell curls.
Lastly, heres another big mistake you see in the gym quite often. I tell the bros go heavy, get stronger if you wanna get bigger. Next thing I know, I see my boy over there on the bench...hes got enuff weight on the bar that he gets 1 rep on his own, and his spotter DEADLFTING it off him for another 6 reps!lol "Heavy" was misconstrued once again. So I get him straight and tell him "heavy as in heavy enuff that you can get 6-8 reps on your OWN youngblood". Too many wanna impress people...and that dont grow muscle. Another example, another bro wanted to kick it with me on back day last week, so we did. I'm 6'0 tall and weigh 275 and been pumping iron all my life...this bro is 28, 6'1, 220 and been kickin the iron for about 6 years. So I told him in advance "dont worry about the weight...use what YOU can use, NOT what I can use, as you want to keep the form cool". So we start off with front lat pulldowns(I cant do chins anymore at 275...kills my cuffs). Sure enuff, this guy keeps trying to use the same weight as me...we get up to the stack and his torso is almost parallel to the floor at the contraction.lol So I holla and get him straight. OK, on to deads...he has no choice on deads but to use his own weight as deads you cant really cheat much on...either its going up or it aint. OK, barbell rows next. One warmup set, 1 feel set, then on to 2 work sets. This kid is doing what looks like bb shrugs hes cheating so much trying to hang. So I gotta get him straight again. T-bar rows next. One feel set, 2 works sets. SAME SHIT! Hes attempting 7 plates and doing T-bar deadlifts! Is it me?lol So I holla again, and he goes down to 4 plates and does them right. We finish up with cross-bench dumbell pullovers, and YES, FINALLY this kid has got it! He doesnt attempt to use the same weight as me.lol Use what YOU can use in proper form and grow!
