MASON ? A Mason father has been charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated murder in the death of his wife and four children found during a house fire Friday, according to Mason police. Michael Veillette, 34, is also charged with one count of aggravated arson.

The dead are his wife, Nadya Ferrari Veillette, 33, and children Marguerite, 8, Vincent, 4, and Jacob and Mia, both 3. The suspect is hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, according to city of Mason spokesperson Jennifer Trepal.

Police have not been able to question him as of Saturday, said Mason Police Chief Ron Ferrell.

Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel said Saturday the investigation is too new to make a determination on the seeking the death penalty. She expects to make that decision Monday.

The fire was reported at about 9:59 p.m. Friday in the 4500 block of Brackenview Court.

According to Mason Police Officer Troy Nelson, the structure fire was put out right away. However, Nelson said Friday night that wounds found on the husband and wife may have been stab wounds.

A woman who lives in the Hickory Woods development was driving home Friday night when she spotted the fire.

"There's flames coming out the window," she told a 911 dispatcher. "I just drove by and saw smoke barreling out of this house." She said a car was parked in the driveway but it appeared that no one was home.

Firefighters arrived within two to three minutes of receiving the call.

While the blaze was put down quickly, some damage to the two-story home in a quiet neighborhood cul-de-sac in the Hickory Woods subdivision near the Mason Early Childhood Center could be seen. Warren County Auditor's records show that the five-bedroom, 4,566 square foot home was owned by Michael Veillette and purchased in 2006 for $436,659

The only damage to the home that could be seen from the street was an upstairs window at the center of the home that had been blackened from the fire damage.

Firefighters from West Chester, Liberty Twp., Turtlecreek Twp., Deerfield Twp., Mason and South Lebanon converged on the scene to put the fire out.

Local fire investigators as well as a State Fire Marshal were also dispatched to the scene. However, investigators were not saying how the fire was started.

Outside the Veillette home, a white wooden cross bearing the names of the slain family members, along with a family of stuffed animals and children's cards, tell the story of the tragedy.

The family's neighbors were shocked to learn of the killings and none had any idea there was trouble in the family.

Priya Varadarajan, whose children played with the Veillette children in their adjoining back yards, said she didn't know the family well but never heard any fighting. She didn't know what the father does for a living other than that he was a consultant who traveled four days a week.

"My kids used to play with their kids in the back yard and had fun," she said. "They were sweet angels. It just goes to show you never know what can happen."

Michael Veillette was reportedly a self-employed engineer, while Nadya worked part-time and volunteered in her children's schools. Marguerite, 8, was a second grader at Mason Heights Elementary and Vincent, 4, was in preschool at the Mason Early Childhood Center.

Mason City Schools spokesperson Tracey Carson said grief counselors would be in place at Mason Heights Monday. Plans are still being discussed for the early childhood center.

Is this shit becoming a regular occurrence? Or is it just seeming this way because the whole world is linked and we know about it as soon as it does happen?... I wonder...
It just appears it's part of the growing insanity of the human race. Maybe things have always been this way. I know they have been off & on throughout history.

sickening, this shit was about 5 minutes away!!

to kill 4 kids like this, damn he better not end up in a mental hospital somewhere.

Ya it is truely a tragedy. Last I heard the father has been updated from critical to serious condition. He is expected to be ok, and police say they have a nice new pair of bracelets and a cell all ready for him.

I dont understand what goes through someones mind before they kill there own children. I'm not saying murder is right on any level but the bond that parents have is supposed to be the strongest. In the past month there has been this incident, the man that threw his kids off a bridge and let them drown. Our world really is going to hell and by the time I have grandkids there may not be much left
