Are there any current or former members of the Armed Forces here?

I have a little brother who wants to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, now i know every one's experience is different but he wants to be in the infantry. which means his experience will be entirely different than that of a marine who works in the air wing or intel.

I just want him to fully understand the lifestyle he will be living as a grunt, and not hating himself for not taking a cushy desk job. If there are any former grunts (Arm y or Marines) here, please PM me. I want to try to get as much information as I possibly can should he decide to become not just a Marine, but to serve as a Marine in a combat arms job, specifically the infantry

Timely bro. Not USMC but my haircut is. Got spotted at my barber by a recently retired Gunnery SGT. from USMC. We had a 2 hour conversation about that. He said...Infantry is in the blood. Special breed that is made for that. This guy had been in 25 years and has seen all the combats this country has been in since his enlistment. He loved it. Not saying he liked to kill people...didn't get that impression at all. He just liked the overall of that life. Glad to see you are looking out for your little bro. If that's what he feels he wants...let him give it a try. We need those guys and I am grateful for the protection they provide for this country. I pray for their safety everyday! He can go and talk to the recruiter who will give a good picture of what's in store. You can go with him!

Im a former active duty Marine....my MOS was a subsistence supply clear but every Marine is a basic riflemen!

To be a Marine and especially a grunt its gotta be in your blood! The grunt eat sleep and breath that lifestyle....the ones that don't can make the rest of the team weak!

above could help better than me...I served in the US Army late 80's

I was in the U.S. Army Infantry for 7 years. Probably be good for him, it straightened my ass out until I got out haha. It's not for everyone, the mental toughness has to be there cause I saw alot of guys breakdown on the battlefield. The physical part was tough at times but you have to be strong minded or you don't cut it. I probably would have did 20 but my hearing was gone and I handsome bulging discs my neck from an injury sustained from rappelling out of a chopper onto a building that collapsed. I do get a check every month so they do take care of you. You really have no social life cause you may be deployed alot, he will be married to the Corp for four years

I spent time in Army Light Infantry and Ranger qualified. What you are saying is true... why go in to all the bullshit if you are intelligent enough to get a better occupation. I think the real thing your brother needs to consider is the long term. Tell him if he wants to get out and apply his military trianing to the civilian world than he might want to reconsider. About the only thing you can do when getting out is apply as a police officer.

If he is hungering for the taste of it, I can tell you that after a few cold lonely nights, he might be saying WTF??? But needless to say, it is still his choice and he can only take advise from everyone and make his own decision. I am going to encourage my kids to go into the Air Force if they are hellbent on the military. The AF gets best chow halls and best treatment over all. Just my 2cents bro!

told his ass not to get married to the first thing with boobs that gives him affection when he gets to his unit, heheh

bigsickd, were you married while in the army? he has a girlfriend, but they are still both 17.

My nephew just got out of Army bootcamp Infantry. Now he is in Kentucky in the Infantry Assault. He has been liking the experience so far

so he did it, not posting ship date, but he has time to prepare. he's still 17, so he needed permission from mom.

he was hell bent on doing it.
infantry might be in the blood, but it might be a double recessive gene, lol. i was the nerd, he was the badass mma wannabe

baby1, thats the 101st at fort campbell right?

did he request it on his contract? to be placed in that unit?

thats awesome, i always thought fast roping was cooler than jumping out of a plane. no offense to the airborne guys, lol

ROCKINRED,

He's doing it because he's young and doesn't care about the long term yet. my parents are already saving up his college fund for once he gets out. I have a friend who is an emergency room nurse (yes a male nurse) who was usmc infantry before he went to college. which works out well when he gets hit with the "male nurse" jokes

"wanna know what my previous occupation was ?" lol

I hear ya. He's got plenty of time and that's how I did it. I went after... but anymore, I try to advise to give every edge you can get.

So let's hear it? What was your previous occupation?
