My accountant called me last week wanting my help to act as a per se trainor. I'm just a gym rat helping out a buddy. Here's the kicker, he is between 900-1000 pds. Doing good so far but I'm confused if I'm taking the right approach. First understand we are extremely limited in what we can do. He is a candidate for a show on t.l.c. mainley because of how extremely rare it is at his size to be able to walk, he gets around just fine. Most of his weight is hanging below the waist so any leg movement are out of the question at this time, same with cardiovascular, all equipment at my gym is rated at 350 max. Chest, back and arms is all we can really do so have been picking two for each 3 sets of 12-15 working same bodyparts but hitting slightly different angles each day. He's wanting to come everyday but got him resting every 3-4 days. He is working 12 hour days in the hayfield and under the care of a specialist down in Houston who has given his blessing but no guidance to weights. I believe he is going to stick it out. Down 80 pounds so far. Lost his sister and father to morbid obesity last year so he is commuted for now at least. Being in his condition im sure anything is better than nothing but still want to approach this properly. So what are yalls recommendations.

Damn thats amazing that he can walk! Did he ever consider getting the stomach stapled? I would think there is no need for him to go to the gym at this point - walking only & diet will shed 100's off him. Once he gets at a more feasible weight, he could hit the gym. JMO.

Yes, he's in prep for sugery but still a long way out. He is wanting to lift in addition to all he is already doing and I have no problem helping a man WHO IS WILLING TO HELP HIMSELF! fuckers really impressed me so far.

Is he getting that big by standing in front of the fridge all night or is it a genetic disorder/disease.?

I don't see how his vitals are "fine".

If he is in surgery prep they taught him how to eat. Some mild cardio and light resistance training are all that is in order for this guy right now. I dont think him trying to push blood around a 1000lb mass is a good idea with a hell of alot of intensity. He will drop weight after the surgery to the tune a pound a day if he follows their diet instructions. I have a friend who did this and it changed his life. He even did a little test cycle a couple years later and added some meat inaisde all that loose skin.

Partially genetic, entire family is 500+ how in the hell they fuck to reproduce is beyond me

lol It just takes one little quick swimmer! lol for him I would say Diet Diet Diet,And walk, walk walk!!!!

Props for helping him out and encouraging, that's huge!!! As Darkness stated, following a directed, clean diet is actually going to be the number one key for him right now. Second is light cardio and very light resistance training. I think if you can just help him stay the course with support and encouragement, he'll reach his goals!

x2 on that one.that's a task that comes from the heart helping the guy out at a time like this for him.hope all goes well.really keep us posted.would love to see his results in the next 12-18mnths.takes a big man to take on a big favor like that...kudos to you for lending a hand when it's needed the most.bet alotta people turned away from him as far as helping him want to get his life on track and be an inspiration to the next person with that kind of weight problem...:iggthumpu

in my opinion the first thing you want to do is jsut get him moving more and get into the routine of goign to the gym even if all he does is random arm movements that he can do at home at the same time try to get him to eat less and properly to help lose more weight until hes able to slowly do a little more then once hes lost a decent amount you can worry about achual workouts because im assuming at his size he wouldnt be able to use much equipement anyways for health reasons and not being able to fit

Avoid movements that put a lot of strain on the joints, especially the knees, at this weight. If you can find movements or cardio that he can do sitting down, then that will be best until he can walk around at a lighter weight. This will be more psychological, but also a lot of physical barriers for him to adjust to. If he is used to eating a certain way, then the psychological changes will be the worst part, so while trying to make it healthier, put more of an emphasis on overall caloric consumption, because he will more than likely not have a desire to eat healthy. In other words, try to help him eat foods he likes, but keep calories manageable, but work them down slowly and not a drastic cut off the beginning. I'd try to get him to increase his non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and lean protein foods while still offering controlled amounts of foods he does like. Non-starchy vegetables will make him feel fuller while not adding more calories, fruits in small amounts will help with hunger from signals sent to the brain, and protein also helps with satiety.

There is so much that could be said in this case, it will be a tough road, he needs to stay strong and in a positive atmosphere to keep him focused. I will say that he has reached out for help, and stumpy, you are a very noble person to help him.

What I do want you to understand is that a very large percentage of these cases fail, so keep that in mind, but do not relay it to him. You need to keep him positive, and yes, surgery is probably going to be needed down the road, at least in most cases.

Keep us updated on this, and good luck brother, you are a good guy for helping such a person!
