Hey bro I grew up making wine with my father and a couple of neighbors as a hobby. They make about 5,000 bottles a time with all different types. I can honestly say that it really comes down to personal taste for wine. Some years the grapes we would get produced a stronger bitter taste which I did not like but others did. Long story short she sounds like somewhat of a novice which more then likely means she does not like too much of a full body wine. Chardonnay can be fruity dry or off-dry. Merlot is mostly a mix of fruity and woody flavors(most popular wine). Cabs are full-flavored because of the tannins from the cabernet grape. Play safe when buying. I will give you a short list with some prices as a reference.
Duckhorn ? any duckhorn wine is quality always rated past a 90 score. Problem is they can be expensive $70 and up.
Chateau La Fleur de Boulard 2004 ? Very good deep red wine. ($40)
Shafer ? always produces quality wines. 2005 received the most praises. ($20 and up)
Concha Y Toro ? 2003 is excellent but all of their wines are good. ($50 and under) it?s a wine from Chile.
Yellow Tail ? Its cheap and people love it. It actually is a good quality wine with a great price. Might not impress but it is a good wine. ($10-20)
