Party lines on your home phone and you needed to wait for them to finish to make a call.

My sister told me about those... She is a bit older than I am..Not that anyone her age is old..and not that anyone else who remembers them is old.....hell,,,I"m going to shut up now.....

When I was 15 (y/o 1980) we moved to Arkansas and had a damn party line. It caused me and my brother several brawls with the neighbors to settle the diputes. One was with our landlord(their 5 sons against me and my brother). We met down at the neighborhood dirt road store. We as well as them had guns , knives, clubs & chains etc. When my dad was quicker on the draw the landlords declared "This ain't no firefight!" So we gentlemanly all agreed to put the weapons aside and fight unarmed. The score: though everyone was hurt and tempory maimed WE WON! Next day we were evicted. BTW My aunt who lives there says they still have party lines. On the remote issue: Imagine being a kid now with all these channels if no mechanical remotes were invented
