Thanks IG :D I've got a much better attitude about it than I had originally when I tore it... and I know that is going to help. I just hope that I can maintain my size while I am off. I can use the time to focus on cardio and diet - and hopefully come back leaner and even better than now.
I will try really hard to get some pictures this weekend - I've been falling off the diet train in the past week since I started the cruise period - but I'll get some pics anyway for "Pre-Surgery" ... and I'll be sure to get post surgical pics... plus I'll see if the doc will give me a DVD of the operation. Maybe then I could even post up some clips. That would be cool.

Anyway - now I just have to call and schedule the surgery... I'm kind of hesitant to make the call... but I will try to get it scheduled in the next 2-3 weeks if possible. The doc said he could "pull some strings" if I want to get it done quicker...

A DVD of the surgery??? Fawk!! I have some pics of my surgery taken thru the scope when he did my knee, and I get a little grossed out looking at them- ewwww....

Have you ever treated anyone that had a mosaicplasty done?

Get your surgery done asap- no sense in putting it off. What's the rehab like? How limited will you be, etc?

mosaicplasty? I don't think I have - it doesn't sound familiar... but a lot of our surgeons don't write out what procedure they performed. I just did a quick search on it - and I can say that I haven't seen anyone with that done.

As far as my own rehab - well... depending on the protocols that I have looked at it can vary... but my surgeon likes to do 4 weeks in a sling with no active movement of the shoulder joint. Tabletop activity is allowed after 1-2 weeks (computer work, writing). PT starts at 4 weeks - starting out with passive range of motion only. Some Docs let you start using biceps actively as early as 6 weeks. Resisted exercise at 10-12 weeks usually - but we're talking super light stuff. Full return to all sports activities at 6-7 months - that is for athletes/throwers... for bodybuilders it is as soon as resistance training is allowed - so 3-4 months out I could start doing some light workouts.
As far as the DVD - I hope I can get one... I had a VHS tape of my last shoulder surgery - that was pretty cool.

4 weeks in a sling? Sure you'll need someone to look after you! How will you manage?

;) I will definitely need someone to look after me... actually one of my friends offered to move in for a month - but I don't think I will need THAT much help... and now that things are going so well with Tracy (former student) I definitely don't need my other friend staying over here!
Gonna suck not being able to drive my car though :( I'm going to go trade cars with my parents this weekend... they are on vacation until May anyway so they won't need it.

Scheduled my surgery today... will be having it on February 28th... Funny how now that I am planning on this surgery it is starting to hurt more... the mind is a funny thing.

Thanks a lot G4E.

I've been really slacking this past week on just about everything - from not getting enough sleep to missing meals and eating too much junk at the wrong times. Things are going to get back under control again starting today. My plan is 1 more week of "cruising" then start back into a partial blast cycle right up until the day before my surgery. I'm going to hit everything as hard as possible within reason so I can be going into surgery with full strength.
After the surgery I am going to start rehabing the shoulder in the pool at work within the first week - even though I am not supposed to start dry land therapy until 4 weeks. We have been doing some shoulder patients in the pool very early on and getting some amazing results - people are ending up way ahead of schedule as far as ROM and strength. I basically want to be as aggressive as reasonably possible to get things better.
I am curious if any surgeons have thought of prescribing GH therapy to speed healing and recovery from surgery... That seems really logical, but I'm not sure how to even bring that up with the doctor... and I'm not about to go out self medicating. Just a thought... Anyway... off to go grocery shopping!

mpresiv - it is going to be February 28th... so i've still got about a month to wait. With my insurance I have to have it at my hospital unless I want to pay a 10% co-pay... and the doc only works at my hospital 1 day a week.

I was thinking it was yesterday. I feel ya on the insurance,,I have had my battles with them in the past. Good luck on the surgery

Thanks mpresiv - I'm kind of glad I have a bit of time to prepare... got a few things to get in order at work before I can take time off.

Just switched cars with my parents since they are out of the state - I'm used to driving a manual trans car - theirs is an automatic SUV ... completely different driving experience ;) Good thing I got it early to get some practice driving it in the snow (if we get some soon) before I have to do it one handed!

haven't been posting much in other journals... been busy lately with the new girl... she's been coming over quite a bit so I haven't been playing online as much as usual - and I'm Ok with that ;)

My training partner's father died over the weekend as well, which is just horrible - he was 57. Getting ready for church on Sunday morning he sat down on the bed to change his shirt, and just dropped over dead of a massive heart attack. I've known the family for 10-11 years now, so this is pretty rough news... The funeral is going to be Thursday morning - my boss is covering my patients so I can go, which is very nice of her.

Finally got back into the gym today - I decided to hold off after talking to the surgeon last week... but I've been going nuts since then so I went back in and did a cruise workout today. Felt good to move some weight again. I won't bother posting the workout, because it wasn't anything worth talkin about.

Another cruise workout today... this time it was biceps/forearms/calves/hams/quads - weak as a kitten for some reason again today... I think this dropping a meal a day is really hurtin my strength, combined with missing a few workouts there.

Workout:

Preacher Bicep Curls (cable):
60 x 15 straight

Dumbell Hammer Curls:
40s x 12 straight

Paramount Calf Machine:
130lbs 3x15 straight

Paramount Prone Ham Curls:
130lbs x 20 straight

BB Squat:
225 x 5 straight
*I planned on 15 reps... but I havent squatted since beginning of january because of the low back injury, so I guess that is OK.

NOTES:
I can't wait to start eating all my meals again!!! I'm still getting in probably 4000 calories, but I am starving all day long... it sucks!

Oh, and I don't think I'll be doing any pics anytime soon... missing those workouts in the middle is really making me feel like crap and kicking in the negative self image issues... I will get some in before surgery though... just so I can have a record of where I was... I'll definitely get as many post surgical pics as possible too for you guys.

Started up blasting again. Resetting baselines this workout... I only got in 4 workouts during the cruise period because of a lot of things that came up - the main one being my training partner's father's death. The weights are significantly down on my chest/shoulder exercises, but the back exercises aren't too bad. Anyway - this workout was done at the gym by my house where I don't know what the smith machine bar weighs, so I used 5lbs as the estimated weight of the bar.

Workout 1

Incline Smith BP:
205lbs x 12 RP

Smith Shoulder Press:
155 x 12 RP

Smith Close Grip Bench:
185 x 12 RP

Rack Chins:
+45lbs x 16 RP

T-Bar Rows:
6 25s (150lbs) x 10 straight set

NOTES:
See top of the entry ;)
Bumping back up to the 6 full meals a day yesterday was a real challange... I started out the cruise period starving on 5 meals... but now I'm stuffed trying to get in the 6 again.

Workout 2

Preacher Curls (cable):
70lbs x 15 RP

Dumbell Hammer Curl (5 second negative each rep):
40s x 11 straight

Paramount Calf Machine (5 second negative, 15 second stretch each rep):
110lbs x 11 straight

Paramount Prone Leg Curl:
175lbs x 21 RP

Barbell Squat:
255 x 5
225 x 3 - got stuck on the pins at the bottom for some reason ... dropped to 185
185 x 6

NOTES:
Aside from the embarassment on squats I think this was a pretty good workout for a "resetting the baselines" workout. I found that I kept coming forward at the very bottom on squats on my "light" sets. No big deal - I will only be doing them once more before my surgery anyway...

Thanks G4E :D
I wasn't thinking of any of the people in the gym - I was just thinking of myself personally... I know I am stronger than that - so it makes me want to take up needlepoint ;)

Well that's what keeps us going at this- knowing we can do better is what drives us. We all have workouts like that. Don't sweat it! :)

Dont sweat it bro!! My motto:....if I'm seeing positive results in the mirror and in my training, I'm not worried about the weights. I'm not big on numbers with squats either but I'm not worried, my legs are growing like weeds!! ;)

Thanks IG and mpresiv ;)
I didn't mean for everyone to take me so seriously on that comment about embarassment, but it is nice to know you guys are so supportive :D

Workout 4
(done at the gym by my house, not the "usual" gym again - training partner is still off from training)

Seated Alternate Dumbell Curls:
45s x 18 RP

Dumbell Pinwheel Curls (4-6 second negative each rep):
40s x 8 straight set
*Damn, these were hard!

Paramount Leg Press Calf Raises (5 second negative, 15 second stretch each rep):
270+sled x 12

Cybex Squat Press:
770+sled x 10 straight
630+sled x 21 straight

Stiff Leg Deadlifts:
100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 all for 6 reps, no rest between sets.

NOTES:
Got home and my legs were still shaking from the SLDLs!! Damn good workout! Very happy - leg press weights were higher than pre-cruise weights, and bicep curls were also higher than before my cruise period. Eating right again is making a big difference!

Both shoulders are really hurting today... so I didn't hit the gym this morning.

2 weeks til surgery... I'm starting to freak out a little.

OK... I'm officially falling apart this week... Got to work yesterday and my thumb started hurting - my thumb! What the hell?? Now it hurts to pick up a glass of water or hold anything - so I don't think I'll be doing any weights today! I think my body is trying to tell me something, not sure what it is though. ;)
On the plus side, my hamstrings are still insanely sore from the stiff leg deads I did on Monday. :D

the falling apart continues... i'm sick now... i went to my doctor yesterday to get some antibiotics as a preventative thing to make sure I am better by Tuesday - because otherwise we have to postpone the surgery!!

Oh no!!! I hope you are better by then. You don't want to have to wait any longer, I'm sure.

Surgery time got moved... I was supposed to go in at 1:30, now I'm going in at 11:30... I'm getting pretty nervous now because I know how much this is going to suck!! Tracy just left for work - now I'm wide awake and can't fall back asleep... (6:45am here now)

Surgery went well today... They had called to move my time up to 11:30 from the original time of 1:30 - but I didn't end up getting in to the OR until 3:30!! So that was a really long time to sit and wait - but at least Tracy was able to get there and see me before I went in for the surgery :)

I didn't get to talk to the surgeon afterwards, but he filled Tracy in on all the details once he found out she is also a PT. Apparently he found that the damage wasn't as bad as we had though. He mostly did a cleanup of the shredded part of the labrum and only needed to put in one suture to tighten the tendon back up - so my recovery should be a lot quicker than we had thought. He actually said I only need to stay in the sling for a day or 2 instead of a month!! He also said I should be able to be back doing "what I do" in the gym in 3 months as long as I take it carefully. That sure sounds a lot better than being able to START trying to work out at 4 months!!

So far the pain hasn't been too bad - I opted to not have the nerve block, and when I first woke up I was really regretting that choice... but now after some food, some Vicodin and some Motrin I'm feeling pretty good :) I've also got a pain pump in my shoulder... I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow, but it is bandaged up pretty good and I don't get to take that off til Thursday. I will definitely get a video clip of the pain pump getting pulled out for you guys.

Thanks everyone for the support, it means a lot!
