BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A man who was reportedly attacked with a baseball bat outside his home early Sunday morning has died.

Bakersfield police responded to a 911 call just before 2:30 a.m. from a woman who said her husband was being assaulted.

Officers responded to the home on the 4300 block of Whitegate Avenue and found 40-year-old Patrick Matsuda suffering from multiple injuries in a front yard.

Matsuda was taken to Kern Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed Matsuda encountered several people outside his home and became involved in a physical altercation. He ran to a nearby front yard where the suspects continued the assault.

Neighbors said Matsuda went outside his home because he was annoyed with people making too much noise across the street. The assault happened when he asked them to stop. Police so far have not confirmed those reports.

The assailants reportedly left the area in separate vehicles. Investigators are looking into the possibility the attack was gang-related.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bakersfield police at (661) 327-7111.

Former bodybuilder beaten to death, widow speaks out

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A former bodybuilding champion is beaten to death outside his home in southwest Bakersfield.

The incident happened around 2:30 Sunday morning on the 4300 block of Whitegate Avenue, near the corner of McKee and Akers.

Area residents say Patrick Matsuda went across the street to tell a group of men outside his neighbor's home to quiet down. That's when the group turned on Matsuda and attacked him.

His wife Annette witnessed the entire incident. She said that the men surrounded her husband and beat him with baseball bats and pipes.

"Beating him repeatedly after he's not even moving," she said. "When he was laying there I tried to help him and stop the bleeding. I tried to save him."

Matsuda was rushed to a hospital but it was too late.

"I just don't know why anybody would do that to somebody," said Annette. She added, "He's a good dad. A good husband. A good friend."

Matsuda was a Cal State Bakersfield grad, and was also a former national champion in amatuer bodybuilding.

He leaves behind four children and a heartbroken widow. "I love him. And I will miss him so much."

Bakersfield police have not released suspect information at this time, but the family is urging anyone with information to please contact police at 327-7111.

So far no arrests have been made.

This is terrible news. I hope that the killers are soon brought to justice, but have little faith in our legal system these days. I will pray for his wife and children.

He was stacked, very sad indeed.

dude if we had "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" punishment over here like they do in other countries we would have alot less crime. these people should be hung up side down by their feet and let members of the family and friends beat them with bats like they are pinatas! is it too much to ask of people to have a little respect and decency these days. i can guarantee u one thing--u come in my yard making a bunch of racket and threaten me with a bat and see if u dont get buried in the hill somewhere behind the house lol we live in the boonies and there is too much dirt and too many wild hogs for any evidence of one's existance to be found ;)

Attacked with a baseball bat .. tragic death! I hope that they're gonna catch those who did that to him.
