SCOTS THUGS SHAVE GIRL'S HEAD Jul 14 2004
By Mark Ellis
TWO Scots tourists forced their way into a girl's bedroom and shaved her head after she refused to have sex with them.
Police in the notorious Greek island resort of Faliraki were sickened by the cruelty of James McMillan and Liam Owens.
McMillan, 19, and Owens, 21, were both sentenced to six months' jail. But they have been allowed to return home to Glasgow pending an appeal.
Faliraki police chief George Goundoumanis said: 'They were attempting to seduce the girl but when she turned them down, they decided to punish her later by shaving her bald.
'They were annoyed that she had said no to them and decided to get revenge.
'This girl was terrified. She went through hell and is very, very upset.'
The victim, a 20-year-old from Chatham in Kent, was staying in the same apartment block as her attackers.
She met them in a city centre nightclub on July 2.
Hours later, McMillan and Owens burst into her room and carried out the degrading attack. The girl called police as soon as the pair left, and they were arrested next day.
McMillan and Owens appeared in court on July 4, and were found guilty of illegal forceful entry and assault. Both were fined ?180 and jailed for six months.
The authorities allowed them to fly home,on condition they return later in the year. Details of the hearing were only released yesterday.
It wasthe first case of the year involving drunken Britons in Faliraki, on Rhodes. But a local policeman said it would do massive damage to the resort's already-tarnished reputation.
He added: 'We are trying so hard to change the image of Faliraki. But when things like this happen, we have no chance.
'We are pleased with the sentences on these men. They might send a message that we will not let these things happen.'
The victim was staying above two nightclubs known for eight-pint, ?50 cocktails called Faliraki Fishbowls.
Groups of drinkers are challenged to drain the huge glasses as quickly as possible.
