SLAP tear

I fell about a month ago & hit my head & left shoulder on the way down. A goose egg popped up on my head which had went away & returned to normal, well as normal as a head like a watermelon can get.

I’ve went to physical therapy 5x now. Finally had an MRI done & met with urgent care doctor to get the results. She tells me there’s 3 parts to the rotator & 2 of the 3 have tears. I’ve also tore the labrum.

Fast forward to today & I visit with orthopedic surgeon to go over the MRI results. He tells me if the rotator is still attached they don’t worry about it & I’ve probably had those tears for awhile. He tells me most men over 40 have them & don’t even know it. He goes on to say we all have labrum tears, specifically I have a SLAP tear, if over 40 it’s just that some of them hurt. All in all he’s really down playing everything.

He recommends a cortisone shot to help with the labrum. He tells me it will never actually heal but the shot can help make it better as far as living with it goes. I agreed to the shot but at this point I’m not really noticing much. The gal that gave it acted like it should be immediate relief.

I saved the best for last, this is a workman’s compensation case. I feel like they are downplaying it & trying to weasel out of it as cheap as possible. If it’s not going to ever heal on its own am I going to go around worrying about ripping it worse from now on? My job is pretty physical not to mention going to them gym.

Curious what you all think. Is cortisone just masking the injury? Is this a normal procedure? I’ve never dealt with any of this before.

I'd get another opinion on this and then document it as part of the claim. If it is actually a full tear nevermind hanging by a few threads of fibers better get the surgery to repair.

But let’s say it isn’t a full on tear or hanging on by a few fibers, then what would you do? I honestly don’t know how bad the tear is.

When I left government contracting in 2014, I spent 2.5 years in surgeries and rehabilitation therapy. As a contractor for the DOD at the time, I fell under something called the Longshore Harbor Workers Act (I think that's right). Its basically Workmans comp for people like us.... Anyway, I fought every step of the way with these rat MFrs just to get treatments approved and they tried so may ways and times to fuck me over. I finally got a lawyer out of DC who was on Bush Seniors staff named Scott Bloch. He was an animal and he knew they're BS in and out and he got me straight and got me what I needed. If I hadn't known and understood, I could have gotten fucked over a lot worse. My recommendation is find a lawyer that will consult with you for free, most will.... and see what they think. The insurance companies are liable for the fees and I paid nothing and was 100% disabled. They almost ruined me before I realized what was happening. Get a lawyer to talk to that's #1 priority imo. These companies have PhDs in screwing people over and they're default position is lie, cheat, and steal. They deny everything and hope that people will just give up. Get an attorney.

I have to complete tendon tears in my right shoulder and one complete tendon tear in my left. I never know it until I slipped on ice and did some partial ligament tears. Two doctors told me that the tendon tears were so old that the tendons redacted beyond repair. I was given a strong cortisone shot to mask pain, I was told that I could workout. When the shot wore off I was gtg. If you get hiccups it's the cortisone shot.

So you have been ok since the cortisone shot with no looking back? Everyone is telling me the labrum will never heal itself which is what’s worrying me. If it remains torn what’s to stop it from tearing more doing chest or shoulders?

You’re definitely not the only one giving me this advice.

Cortisone can work pretty quickly. It doesn’t heal anything, but helps with inflammation and pain. How long it lasts can vary, but hopefully you’re on the mend soon.

Def get second opinion from a specialist of your own selection and talk to an attorney first.

One or two cortisone shots at most as it is actually harmful in the long run when done often.
Most definitely get another opinion! WC doctors and employers WC insurance companies DO NOT want to do any more than the bare minimum.
Seek consultation from a reputable WC attorney and use their doctors to get treatment.
Keep in mind, whatever settlement you may get, if that’s the route you go, the doctors fees will be deducted from the settlement and those fees are usually higher than if you go to the doctor yourself.
If you retain counsel, I personally would find a great orthopedist and have him do MRI’s and give you a treatment plan. Save the receipts and turn it in to your attorney so they can add that to the claim for you to get reimbursed.
Don’t sign anything from WC.
Are you still working or are you out for now?

Agreed. At one point I had torn the ligaments that held the tibia and the fibula together and so the leg was twice the size and the insurance people ordered me to do physical therapy..... 3 fucking rounds of physical therapy for torn ligaments. Even the therapy people said it was ridiculous as the bones weren't magically gonna jump back into place... So yeah, the absolute minimum and no matter what they tell you, they are actively trying to fuck you. Trust me. I promise you they are trying to screw you over. Get a lawyer and make it a good one and you will be ok.

Still working full time with limited weight restrictions that were just added on Monday. Before that no restrictions & it’s been a month or more since the injury

Hey brother I have a slap tear . I didn't do surgery . It really doesn't bother me I watch how I lift now and don't go as heavy . I noticed it when I was bench pressing my left arm felt more tired if that makes sense . A friend of mine who has now passed away gave me some good insight on lifting with it . I don't know how physical your job is but you can always try to make adjustments instead of surgery . When I talked to the Dr. he talked about putting a anchor in my arm and stretching a muscle to wrap around it . But I also know when its done sometime your bicep looks kind of off

Job is pretty physical tbh. Lift boxes & bags that weigh upwards of 80# daily.

Im a little Leary of letting it go because it seems like it could just tear even more at any given time including lifting weights. Then I’m not so sure I would be able to go back & get it fixed.
