Yes, it could have been worse I imagine. However, you have all your faculties. I've pushed the envelope like you and many others but sometimes the cards just simply fall a certain way without our control regardless of the lifestyle or precautions taken.
I've known you to be an extremely private person over the last near decade. But I do know that you're a very determined person. That in itself will aid you most likely into making a full recovery akin to Kevin Everett.
Make yourself try to use the things that aren't working. My wife's younger brother was born brain damaged. They told his parents to institutionalize him saying he'd never walk and be able to function. Instead they did what was called "patterning" three times a day which required five people. Four people moved a limb and the fifth turned his head. He was eventually able to walk, run, ride a bike, shoot hoops and has deadly aim with a baseball.
You're young and strong and will overcome this in the long run with perseverance.
