will it be counter productive to do barbell shoulder press and dumbbell press in the same workout or should i do one or the other? also how about barbell curl and alternate dumbbell curls?
thanks

In my opinion yes. I would say in one shoulder workout you do a standing military barbell press and the next one do a seated dumbell arnold press or a standard dumbell press. Shoulders are delicate creatures.
Same thing for bi's. Barbell curls one week dumbell next week. Keep your body guessing.

Each hit the muscle group slightly differant so I think doing both exercises is fine, you just do each exercise fewer sets than if you only did one exercise.

DOing both is cool. Especially if you make one the first set heavy lower reps and make the other the last set lighter more reps.

No problem doing both. I often hit press behind neck and db press on delt day. Also I often do bb curl and alt db curl on arm day. Results have been good - gettin' bigger so it must be workin' haha! As lifts said, they hit the muscle slightly different. DB presses allow the elbows to be far out to the sides - much moreso than military press. That focuses more on the side delts vs front delts with militaries. Alt db curls allows supination, which you miss out on with bb curls. Either way, it's not such an important factor that it will make or break you. More important is that you are indeed doing these Mac Daddy exercises instead of pussy-ass exercises like cable curls, cable laterals, cable-this, machine-that, yada yada haha. :p

I usually choose one or the other cause I will start shoulders with them and do 6-8 sets pyramiding

ok guys thanks for all your help. for now ill continue to alternate between barbell and dumbell press every other workout. heres what my shoulder routine looked like today. how does it look? should i add subtract or change anything up?

dumbell press
2x 20 warm up
3x 10-12

upright rows
1x 15
3x 10-12

seated side laterals
3x 12-14

seated bent over laterals
3x 12-14

also shrugs
3x 15

Looks similar to what I do. I do more sets though.

Your seated bent over laterals...in addition to hitting the rear delt, if your squeeze the traps together and concentrate on that evey rep they will biuld killer traps.
