Some of yall have been lifting for 20+ years, which is crazy! So I'd like to pick your brain for a minute on what drives you to constantly bust your ass at the gym day in & day out? I read some numbers and apparently 66% of Americans make goals to get fit, but 3/4 of them don't ever make it past 6 weeks in - which I think is crazy!

For me, I love the feeling of knowing that I worked harder in my gym session than some people do in their whole day... and I would be lying if I didn't love the way I look in the mirror, either - especially post workout! My father has been on the verge of developing diabetes for the past couple of years as a result of being overweight - and had a unexpected, serious heart attack about two months ago, which definitely was a wake up call to my family. I love my father but I don't ever want to be on the plethora of pills/meds that he's been on and off of when I'm his age.

Someone that loves to golf needs no motivation to go golfing. Someone that loves to fish needs no motivation to go fishing. I need no motivation to hit the iron because I love it. If I can't pump iron, just shoot me and end it now. ;) :D

I can't add anything to this. This is it

Vagina that's what motivates me and the ability to kill any little prick that breaks my daughters heart that's why I lift

The idea that I feel and look better at 52 than I was at 42, at that I can be better at 53 tan I was at 33.... like Ozzy, I am motivated by the way my wife touches me after a work out... the way the young men at work look away when I'm angry and the way the young women occasionally give me the "I'd still do him" look...

I guess I'm the odd man out.

This is going to go against the grain but I work out so I look decent and can eat lot of food.

My metabolism sucks and weights are the only things that allows me to pig out and look decent.

Cardio is useless for me in this department.

Vanity? Sort of. But being able to kill food is my motivator.

There are days I HATE training and everything hurts and I lose my desire.

I give up for a few days and then I notice immediately the minimal food I have to eat to maintain my waist line - then jump back into the gym.

Sad but true. Lol :p

Wow that's original! But I don't get it - working metab is a #'s game - burn more cals than you take in. Many other activities burn more cals than weights, so I don't get it when you say cardio doesn't cut it with you. I mean the only thing I can see regarding weights is it will add more lean tissue which in turn keeps you burning more cals around the clock. However I don't see how that outweighs some HIIT cardio for burning cals. I mean obviously YOU know your body, just sayin'.

Since you posted this I have a whole new take on you Doc - I envision you going to the gym and killing the iron, then going home to eat - sitting at the table with a big overflowing plate of pasta & garlic bread, and smiling ear to ear looking at it like it's your first piece of virgin meat bwahahha! :p

Kinda hard to believe you have a slow metab based on your avi before - look like Zane! Must have took alot of work. :igok:

I hate working out

but i love looking good and competing in high level sports - to do those things you have to put the work in and i love the results

Somedays, I can't get enough, and my mind is just at peace, and completely clear while I'm at the gym. Other days, I'm so beat before I even get there I just want to leave, but push through anyways. And then sometimes I don't wanna work out, but i'll get an awesome workout in. Honestly, I think that it's just been such a big part of my life, it's engrained in me. Even when I have an off period, my mind is always thinking of what I need to eat, and when. I can't turn it off, so I just continue to train and work out. I'll go through my phases, but I always return, it's something I literally cannot get out of my head that it's something that needs to be done, so it's easier to just stay with it. So I guess that's what motivates me.

I look at my fat pig brothers and know I could easily get there in no time if I slack.

I have been lifting for 27 years! I started out with the motivation of looking good and being strong and more intimidating than other people around. Now that I have been lifting longer than most of the people in the gym have been alive lol, I do it because it is a way of life for me, it is something that I do everyday, if I miss a day I feel guilty and I always make it up. I feel that I shrink and get small if I miss a day. I went on vacation and there wasn't a gym in the hotel so what I did was I took my 5 day workout and condensed it into 3 days so that I got my weeks workout in, I left on Wednesday and I lifted Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning then I left on a 14 hour drive right after I trained! I got back today and went right to the gym to get my first day of training in this week!!

Thanks
TMM

I've been training for 20+ years too but the last 3 or 4 have been the best for me. I let booze get a hold of me for a while and that basically killed my training. I found myself more dedicated to the bar than the gym. I totally quit drinking almost 4 years ago. I decided to completely dedicate my self to the gym rather than the bar. I always did love training but now I really do have a love for it. If I ever stop training I would end up back in the bar, and at this point that is not an option.

as soon as I saw this thread I thought hmmm.... I wonder how many people said something along these lines. lol
