I posted this at WCBB too but wanted to get other views.

My son will turn 12 in January and has expressed interest in some of the weight machines and really likes the treadmills. During PE at his school they have done a few weight sessions.

Any opinions on starting this young? I don't feel it is too young as long as the weights are very light for high reps. I started some body weight things and medicine balls when I was 13 and I turned out okay. Well...... :D

He will be required to take a fitness area orientation for the gym before he can even go up there.(he is signed up) What do you think is a decent routine? Full body once or twice a week? I was thinking just run him through the machines for a few years until the boys drop but have him come spot me on the free weights to get a flavor for that.

Anything would be better then the all day video game sessions. :)

I dont know the medical view on this. I got into weight training when I was about 12 or so. He did bench press and curls with some deads and squats mixed in. I also did martial arts as a young teen and this was very intense training, and not using heavy weights. I was so ripped at 15 you could count the muscle fibers.

My 12 year old daughter wants to start hitting the gym with me and I would not pass this chance up for anything to get to do something I love with the kids. My plan for her is everything I do, only with ALOT less weight and higher reps. Girls seem to respond better to higher reps anyway, and I bet little boys are similar prior to puberty. THat's just a guess. So for her....

Band assisted pullups
Cable rows
Deads only very light and only if I can get her form perfect. If not scratch them.
Light squats, maybe split squats too.
My doc's magic hamstring excercise (not available without perscription)
Walking lunges with something held over her head.
Incline DB press
Bench press
Overhead DB press
Lat raises.
Something for traps (girls need traps too)
Something for abs.

And if I get tired I will hook the sled to her and watch her pull it and eat an ice cream cone while I sit on my ass and smile as I watch.

Since he likes the looks of the machines(so it might keep him interested), I figured I would run him through all the machines and then add in some split squats. I'm thinking he can handle a light whole body machine workout a couple times a week but maybe only the split squats once a week. Don't know.

Once he hits puberty pretty hard, I will gradually move him to the dumbbells.

Then I will hook the car to him and let him pull me home while I drink my protein shake.

Machines have their place, but one last suggestion...since they really dont give the body what it needs in terms of engaging stabalizers and such, I would mix some free weight stuff in there for him if you can interest him.

Yeah, I want to get him to all free weights but I'm afraid he will lose interest right now. I tried it in the basement and it didn't last long. I will have him come over and "spot" me to maybe get the fever.

My son was around that age when a medical issue happened & the docs suggested he lift weights. on certain exercises I would use a machine until his stablizer muscles catch up like bench squats & military. other then those 3 id try to have him do free weights.

Take him to a gym filled with sexy chicks. He will stay. If he begins to loose interest even still, have a couple of them smile and wink at him. And if his ego is anything like most of ours, get one of the hotties to feel his muscles and tell him how good he is starting to look....then he will never leave, even long after his old man is dead....

The correct mirror angle training is essential for proper viewing of the chickas.

I started with free weights at 11 or 12, just kept the reps high and the form spot on. That is what i would do, just start burning correct form in at sets of 12 and slowly add weight and keep the reps the same. No reason not to do all the lifts available. I just don't like machines because for the most part they don't fit me right and you can have dogshit form.

The stamina on kids this age is insane! They seem to completely recover after 1 night.

Great thought here I like it...

I told my son today that curls are for the girls. He said weight lifts are for the chicks.

I'm so proud. :)

I saw a beginners class full of like 20 jiggly ones today. I like to watch them and their jiggly stuff.

My boy finally got his weight room orientation done. He went up today to workout with me. He will be gone all day tomorrow so we tried to squeeze all his workout in in one session. Since he is just beginning, I figured he could do a two day split on the weekends when I go. I don't know if I could get him in there another day or two. He did pretty good. I went to the free weight area and he did 3 sets on all the machines. I brought him over for a few free weight exercises. He did 20 minutes on the treadmill after.

He has a sleep over tonight so I'm thinking he will be the first one to sleep. His ass was dragging. :)

BTW, I had to add a little chocolate syrup to his whey isolate and glutamine to get him to drink it. :D
