Do I just need to get some books and take an exam to b certified as a personal trainer? I just want to do it for myself. I don't plan on taking it up as a career.

To be a good one I would recommend reading as much as you can in books and research journals (Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research for example), try taking some basic exercise science courses if you can (if you are in college), and look into some of the different certification organizations to see what materials they offer. Most have a book that you need to study to get the cert - others have courses you attend...
I got my cert through the NSCA - and they have a book you can study to learn the basics... there are also videos and things you can get. The test itself is pretty expensive, and very difficult.

I would HIGHLY recommend the books the NSCA if you want to get some really solid information.
Check out http://www.nsca-lift.org and take a look in their store. The Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is a GREAT book. The Essentials of Personal Training also looks like a good reference.

So you said you don't want to make a career of it...do you want to just do some training on the side, or just have the knowledge?

Maybe some training on the side at the gym part time or something, but mainly for my own personal knowledge plus I have turned into a certification junky :D I currently have a career diploma as pc repair tech and I'm comptia A+ cert'd plus working on a net+cert and ccna cert

hey Aaron, I have actually been considering getting the NSCA-CPT materials and start working with them within the next week or so.

I have a few questions though.
What is the cost of the test? the cost of joining NSCA?
Can you use a calculator on the test? :P

I was also wondering if you took your test using a computer or went to the in-person testing?
