I always found this aspect of fighting fascinating... here is the basic synopsis of what a glass chin is about.

me, personally.. I would consider to have a so called "iron chin"

from even when I was a kid, I have fought numerous people that showed extreme frustration by not being able to put me down. I am talking heavy hitters that were used to laying out people in a punch or two.

I was a thin ripped character before I started bodybuilding... one thing I always had though was abnormal traps, before I ever touched a weight. I have been hit in the jaw and face with everything my opponent could muster, even if they outweighed me by 50+ lbs. and it hardly phased me physically at all, often giving me the advantage to come back with a flurry when they figured they finished business.

I dont say this to sound like a tough guy, in fact, I consider my punching power to be mediocre at best... and I dont fight fisticuffs anymore, I consider it a waste of time and even if you win, you typically end up hurting yourself in the process....

I only mention these things to emphasize the points made in this article... appears there is the debate between whether a "strong chin" relies on thick neck and trap muscles or merely "heart"... I consider myself to have both.

what do you all think? personally I would rather die than concede defeat, but I dont think that is what physically stopped me from ever being officially knocked out in my life.

the way I see it, its your genetics and the way you are muscled and your nerve anatomy... everyone knows that the sweet spot is the juncture of your jaw bone... but despite being hit there with tremendous force, it has never rattled me ever in my lifetime. sure you lose some in your time, but I have never gone lights out as many people have.

what say you? lets save the toughguy bravado and win loss records... I am just curious what people think about this "glass jaw" phenomenon.

taking continual punishment is mental, getting your lights turned out is not.

Hey Tommy Morison had huge traps and a big neck.......need I say more?

meaning you are prone to catchin "teh aids"?

lol, I read recently that he supposedly tested negative after being blackballed for like a decade after filmin rocky 2 or 3 or whatever the fuck....

apparently he was wanting to make a comeback, I dont know if he did it or not or if they gave him the health ok to go ahead...

that would really suck to lose some of your best prime years due to some false positive test.

There really is no ryme or reason to it...ive seen all forms of people got ko'd by a gust of wind... and all types of people get hit by mack trucks and not budge

i do believe regaurdless of who u are your chin will get worse the more punishment u take

I agree, if you once had an iron chin and get brutally ko'd your chin will turn to shit real quick.

Clifford Entienne comes to mind

interesting thoughts... as I said I gave up throwing hands a long time ago... so I guess I will never know for sure as I have taken a serious pounding to the jaw and honestly it felt no worse than a slap in the face.

could very well be that the more you get hit, the weaker the jaw gets... I dont plan on finding that out first hand anytime soon though.

It could also have something to do with the guys you fought on the streets were never trained to be standup killers in any gym.

There are some points in everybody's head, that will knock you out if it enough force is applied. The most important ones are the side of your chin, your temple and the back of the head. You can be very resistant to pain and take a lot of punishment to the face, get major cuts and keep on going ignoring the headache and dizzyness, but that does not mean you cant be knocked out. They are two different things. Some people dont like getting hit in the face, and some dont care if they get hit, they stay in the pocket and keep on throwing counter's. However if they get hit on the chin for example ( with enough force) the chin bone gets pushed back and taking the nerves that are attached right behind them, This sudden jerk of the nerves send shutdown signals to the brain in an instant and your brain auto shuts down to prevent additional injury. Funny thing if slide somewhere and hit your head to a hard place, you will get a lot less damage if you are knocked out, vs beeing awake and having all your muscles tight, falling of the stairs, breaking bones due to unflexing hard tight muscles. Anyways there are some people who are more resistant to getting knocked out genetically. They have thicker bones, less nerves or less sensitivity on their nerves, but they still will get knocked out getting hit hard enough. I personally got hit many times and never been knocked out, but one of them landed right on my temple, I blacked out for about 2 seconds and eventhough I was dizzy until the end of the round, i didint get knocked down, however if that punch landed a few inches to the right or left, i could have been out beeing attended on the floor.

True out on my feet....

See if rocky marciano hits you like that, you might even die... no matter how much punishment your face is willing to take :)

plenty of people hit much harder than the 185lbs marciano, double L for example.

Well the most well known hard hitter is mike tyson, eventhough the guy s a joke. If you watch his old fights, they look like they have been rigged, he swings, hits the guy and the guy falls on the ground shaking vigorusly like having a seiziure. However I am a beliver of even a 130 pound guy like manny P can knock almost every regular human beeing in an instant

tyson didn't fight the best of comp, and the combo of his speed and power on an unprotected chin was devastating.
